No matter how you may feel about Tiktok, there's no denying social media in general has promoted mindless hours of scrolling, toxic clout chasing, complete brain rot of a great portion of the population that values their favorite mouth piece on social media over actual facts and science.

I'd argue it's also accelerated the hyperpartisan problems we face with literal sitting politicians aims for insta/tiktok/youtube clicks and likes instead of real policies. With these little games working because so many are addicted to social media and their little think tank bubbles.

We also have a social problem that social media has definitely played a part in damaging as well. Antisocial behavior and parasocial behaviors that social media definitely isn't helping to reverse since again social media targets these bubbles.

Lets not even get started on deluded populism of bubbles thinking they are the majority because they only interact with their bubble. Or the rampant misinformation and disinformation. "I saw it on YouTube or Tiktok so it must be true!"

Then tell me why Facebook and Twitter are different.

But the trend originally spread on Facebook, according to an investigation by Anna Foley with the podcast Reply All.

Campaign workers also used anti-TikTok messages to deflect from criticisms that Meta had received for its privacy and antitrust policies.

Disagree with using this as an inherent measure. Judge each idea on its own merits rather than "China does it so it's bad". If it's a bad idea on its own merits, don't do it for that reason.

TikTok may be single-handedly keeping physical bookstores relevant in the US, so I'll begrudgingly support its existence >_>

I don't care. I have had some nights where I spend way too long on TikTok and that makes me want to delete it. That'd be my personal choice though and I don't need to force that on anyone else.

I do think that TikTok to me feels different than e.g. Twitter or Facebook, even if all three are aiming for the same end goal (keeping me on their service as much as they can). Obviously part of this is based on the points in my life where they were released, but I generally viewed them as:

Facebook: Keep up with friends and family
Twitter: Follow celebrities/news sources/etc. you like and get bite-sized pieces of information
TikTok: Let the algorithm decide what you should watch until you decide to stop
YouTube: Youtube shorts are a step in the wrong direction imo, in general I don't think of YouTube as something where I sit down and public and just watch five minutes of YouTube here or there.

And so from that perspective, it's clear why in my mind there's a distinction there. Not claiming that's sufficient to legally make a difference between them, but it's why I think "by design" TikTok is worse, even if people have turned their own Twitter/Facebook experiences into equally bad things.

I don't use TikTok, I don't like TikTok, I don't really 'get' TikTok, but I also see no cogent reason to either ban TikTok or force ByteDance to divest themselves of TikTok. This whole thing just seems like sinophobic mass hysteria and the exact sort of reactionary nonsense the presidential veto was intended to counter. A shame that Biden has said he won't use it. I guess it's up to the Senate to be the voice of reason.

For real though, if the only "legit" reason is because Chinese people lie on the platform, you guys have a serious misunderstanding of how the US Constitution works.

I voted yes solely because the only things I see come out of it are idiocy or genuinely dangerous things, but honestly I couldn't care less.
