If Biden wins, probably Nikki Haley.

If Trump wins, we might not get another election.

Why did Trump leave the White House the first time if he was going to establish himself as a permanent dictator? Did they trick him onto the helicopter by telling him there was free cake and pizza on board?

Legally speaking, he's not the president after his term ended, so he can't just stay in office. He tried to take over. His ploy to remain in power failed. That's why 1/6 happened and he made all of those accusations of election fraud.

Why compare him to a comic book villain? Leaders like Trump (and worse) are a dime a dozen throughout history.

This time it will because anyone in the Republican party with a shred of honor has been driven out. All the sane people in the room won't be there next time. Trump loyalists are in place in key positions across the country. SCOTUS is even further off the deep end.

My theory is Trump still wasn't fully sure what he could get away with. This was all pre-Jan. 6th before we all saw how far the GOP would go to protect Trump.

Now he's not only more spiteful than ever before, he also knows he has the Republican Party completely by the balls to the point where he can openly say he'll be a dictator on Day 1 and not lose support.

Also, Project 2025.

I guess you somehow missed Jan. 6th?
On a second term, he would make it a priority to do away with any agencies that could keep him in check, (or replace their staff with loyalists who would never defy him). He would also have the SCROTUS in his back pocket.

Because (silver age and golden age) comic villains were known to mutter "This time I will not fail" or "This time I will succeed" without the slightest hint of irony.

If what you're planning didn't work the last time, why should it work this time?

It helps that this time he has competent people working on it and it is being prepared well in advance instead of done in a couple months.
Dont expect his next attempt to be so pathetic.

Of course the best thing is for Biden to win again so Trump doesnt have the opportunity.

I'm not going to pretend that it's painless. Republicans have already pushed or attempted bullshit laws from "cops can do anything they please" to "it's a crime to call a trans youth by their proper pronouns."

But literally every election has somebody claiming that it's the last one we'll ever have if the wrong party wins. Democracy was supposed to die with thunderous applause when Bush was president. I had an employer and a family member who claimed that Obama was going to turn America communist and that we'd never have another election. People said that Trump was going to refuse to vacate the first time that he was president and that it was dangerous to give nuclear launch codes to a man whose catchphrase was "You're fired!" (The freakin' Avengers said that.)

If it were Ron DeSantis or Marjorie Taylor Greene, I might be worried that democracy was going to end with the next election. If reelected, Trump will allow more hate crimes, more police brutality, more fascist state laws to be passed, and we'll do our best to undo the damage in four years. We won't be able to bring back those who will die because of him, but we might be able to systematically undo some of the harm. It will be more difficult for the left to get elected if Republicans are allowed to pass what laws they please, but it won't be impossible.

I don't want that man back in the White House. He's validated white supremacy as an ideology and fascism as a political stance. I don't want the harm that he'll bring to peoples in this nation. But he won't be able to make himself Fuhrer and put the final nail in democracy's coffin if that happens.

I see Abbott or Haley, for repubs, Newsome for Dems.

It feels like Dems don't have very many really popular candidates at the moment, I feel like everyone in 2016 for the Dem caucus has pretty good pull.

Forgot about her. I'd vote for Whitmer over any other candidate, her ability to deal with the absolute insanity that is Michigan these days is probably exactly what we need. Not actually very big on Newsome, but I'd vote for anyone under 80 that isn't a hawk tbh.

I said a couple years ago that a money ticket would be Whitmer/Newsom, with either being the Presidential candidate.

Two good looking, charismatic, great speakers.

Fair enough, and Trump should pay the full penalty for treason, but that desperate attempt at reversing voter decision only confirms that he doesn't have the power to lock the door and make himself king. A lot of people like to point out that 2/3 of the military are Republican. If he could have summoned them to his aid, why didn't he?

I've expressed nothing but consistent contempt for the man.

I hated him two decades ago ago when he said that a homeless man had six million more than he did. Since then, my opinion of Trump has sunk even further.
