No. It has been around for a long time, it was just not vilified like it has become. Leftists/centrists stopped using it in any real metric and then right-wingers started to use it as an insult.

Woke has twisted its meaning over the years. Right now, someone who is "woke" is seen as someone who likes to virtue signal, has a savior complex and is usually self hating for clout on the internet.

The terms change with time but the subject has always been brought up. People don't change.

15 years ago it was ""damn SJWs!!iii!!!" until people ran it into the ground. It'll change again and the cycle will continue.

People don't want justice for the average person.

Somewhat. It's just been co-opted by goppers and used to describe anything they don't like.

short version:

  • originally used by african-americans in the 1930s, basically to mean being aware of social prejudices
  • later was co-opted in the early 2010s by other marginalized groups like LGBT and women with the same definition, this was relatively uncontroversial
  • later later co-opted around the time of Trump's second election (and really picking up steam after the capital riot) by the GOP and other people on the far-right as a generic snarl word for left-wing ideology, or just anything they don't like. basically if you see someone right wing calling something woke, it is essentially the same thing as them calling something communist, cultural Marxism, or SJW.

It meant that a long time before conservatives truly hijacked it. It's literally just a rebranding of SJW. Within the past ten years it really came into the mainstream with people unironically using the original use and a collective "get a load of this guy" from the majority of people. It wasn't until a year or two ago that folks like Tucker Carlson started using it for...whatever.

It's mainly now just used by conservatives to describe something they don't like -- which usually just involves the LGBT community or maybe a superhero movies having a female lead.

Most of the time, these people don't even know how to define "woke," since it's basically lost all meaning by this point beyond being a buzzword. If you see somebody calling something woke, chances are they're actually saying, "I'm upset because there's a Black/gay/trans/etc person in this thing."

This. Right-wing racists stole the word and used it to ultimately become an all-encompassing "safe to use" bigoted term for any demographic they don't like.

Unfortunately, a lot of people are susceptible to right-wing messaging and adopt their narratives, even when not right-wing or apolitical themselves.

its been around for awhile
being woke is basically being a decent person
being anti woke is being a bigot and against basic decency
so if you ever see anyone the term woke in a sentence as a negative you know they dont have opinions worth more than dog shit

No. It's recently been appropriated and perverted by racists to flagrantly display their racism by calling anything they don't like, i.e. minorities women and LGBT, "woke".

No it wasn't.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/woke-meaning-word-history-b1790787.html

Origin of the word woke

The phrase woke and to stay woke is not new it began appearing in the 1940s and was first used by African Americans to literally mean becoming woken up or sensitised to issues of justice, says linguist and lexicographer Tony Thorne.

I remember black people used the word in the 2010s I think to spread awareness of what's going on and in recent years the right wingers stole that term and used it as something negative towards many subjects

It's part of the southern strategy to appropriate terms and criticism as a means to control their narrative. They've been moving goalposts ever since emancipation.

The latest being DEI which literally is diversity equity and inclusion. Like wtf, we grow up learning things like sharing, the golden rule and appreciating the differences of others. Republicans and the right are a bunch of creepy snowflakes and "Chuds" are an apt description of them.
