Only ever buy the cheap microsoft/logitech ones with the classic 2 buttons and a mouse wheel. Never had an issue with them. I always thought having buttons on the side would be annoying to hold.

I have a Razer mouse. Nothing super fancy. I actually don't like gaming with keyboard + mouse and use controller whenever I can. It's nice for surfing, though. The buttons on the side correspond to back or forward and I use the back one a lot.

I've been using the Razer Deathadders for years, I like them. There's questionable build quality for some of them but it really depends on your luck. I've had one that I've used for years with no problems and I have another one where the scroll wheel is a bit janky sometimes. The side buttons are used for forward and back which is nice.

I also don't use this mouse for gaming, just work and general computer usage.

I've had Razers and hate them deeply. My favorite now is Steelseries Sensei. But my all time favorite was a Logitech office mouse kinda one.

I do think 5 buttons is the absolute minimum, since you can navigate forward/back and you will definitely use them in games. Buttons 6 and 7 are occasionally useful but not a priority.

I had a razer mouse with customizable side buttons and middle click

i remember it really helped me while playing left 4 dead which is the only online game I played extensively. I cant remember what I mapped the side buttons to but it was convenient

but the real value was in mapping the buttons for photoshop. Again, I cant remember what exactly I mapped the buttons to but it made me way more productive when doing creative things

gaming mouse is cool, I still miss having side buttons but it definitely is just a luxury and not a necessity because its been 10 years and I havent gone out of my way to buy another one

I used to use Logitechs, but on multiple mice (G400 and MX518 revival) I started to experience scrollwheel issues and phantom clicks after a while. I've switched to the Corsair Sabre and it's been really comfortable and reliable so far. Side buttons are nice and big so you can pretty easily hit them from several thumb positions.

For gaming, the two main advantages are the DPI adjustment, which for non-pros is probably best as a "set it and forget it" kind of thing unless you're really into playing sniper or something, and the additional buttons that you can map to whatever. I find them really useful in FPS games where I can set them up to change weapons without having to fiddle with the scrollwheel and take my finger off M2.

The real star is having the side buttons for non-gaming use. They should default to forward/back in web browsers, Windows Explorer, etc., and it's a convenience that can't be understated.

I would never go back to gaming on a regular 3 button mouse.
5 buttons is the ABSOLUTE minimum. It's so ridiculously useful to have more options on your right hand for buttons once you get used to it.

DPI settings, though, yeah you can get by without using them. Its only real useful purpose is changing between sensitivities for FPS games IMO, but even then most modern FPS have built in options for this so its kind of redundant.

In the $40-50 range, I think, though I know at least one of them I got on sale for less. If you want wireless that price will go up though, but these should last you a good few years if you buy something with good build quality and aren't super rough on it.

I haven't used any of their current gen hardware, so it really depends on where the quality level is at these days. Like I said, they worked well for a while but I started to get two problems: additional unwanted click inputs when I clicked, and sorta fluttery unwanted scrollwheel inputs when the wheel moved sometimes. The double click issue in particular is very well known, and if they're still using the same components it's probably still a problem. I think there are fixes you can attempt but it's one of those things where nothing works for everyone.

Aside from those problems, they were good mice, but I've found that the Corsair is more comfortable for me. The side buttons on the older Logitechs were smaller and harder to get at, and they had DPI buttons on either side of the scroll wheel that were easy to accidentally hit. That's very much personal preference though and I'm sure their design choices have changed in the last several years.

Literally no distinction between gaming and regular mouses. As long as it has the right weight, DPI, and 5 buttons, it's pretty much equivalent. I prefer ambidextrous shapes too, which exists in both office and gaming mouses.

This is my go-to as well - not a ton in the way of extra buttons but I absolutely couldn't go back to not having the ones it does have.

I have been using an MMO mouse for about ten years now. I love having the full 1 through + buttons at my thumb even when not gaming.
