It has come to light that after california's recent law saying that the minimum wage for all fast food workers would be at least 20 bucks per hour now, that there was a provision excluding restaurants that were mostly bread restaurants...etc.. like panera bread and turned out a big contributor to newsom's campaigns owns almost 40 panera breads in calif. and they would not be subject to the 20 buck an hr minimum wage law. Iirc newsom's camp has not officially denied the allegations. But any of you know if retailers like walmart are subject to this new 20 buck an hr law, or think they should be?

I'm not surprised by corruption in either party, but that sort of corruption is irrelevant compared to what republicans are doing right now.

iirc he won't even officially deny it. Do you consider this offense if true, to be a very serious one? There's no way it can be reversed or anything done about it right?

Wondering how Panera Bread is going to explain to their employees why they're not getting paid as much as other fast food places?

According to the article, the labor union accepted the exemption, and Panera doesn't consider itself fast-food anyway? If freshly-made bread is their main product, then it might be a worthy exemption, and not that big a deal.

The corporation that owns Panera made a fucking $65000 donation to his re-election. This pales in comparison to the millions in donations to both Republican and Democrat candidates in California. In the end, this is a very much a literal nothing-burger that nobody really cares about.

People act like Newsom got millions from Panera bread.... he didn't. He got something like $165,000 all told. Newsom spent tens of millions of dollars JUST on the recall.

It's ridiculous to think that the amount of money presented here had that much of an influence.

you don't believe the accusations? newsom's camp won't even officially deny it. If the donation was only like 160k that makes a huge huge difference?

$100,000 of that was during the recall. Newsom raised $90 million during the recall.

That donation was 0.1% of the money he raised.

A massively insignificant amount coming from a long time friend of the governor? And your assumption that it's the MONEY that caused the policy, which by the way Newsom says does not exempt PB?

The governors office disputes it because PB doesn't do the entire bread making process on site and ships in ready made dough.

Alex Stack, a spokesperson for Newsom, told the AP that the story is absurd and that the governors legal team believes Panera Bread is not exempt from the law.
To be exempt from the minimum wage law under the bakery exemption, restaurants must produce bread on-site. Newsoms office said chain bakeries such as Panera mix dough at an off-site location and ship it to the restaurant to be baked.

Does this potentially leave a loophole for PB to exploit? Sure. Close the loophole if it's that big of a problem.

Probably the economic realities of those who still engage in operating bread stores and those purchasing at the locations. We likely are not talking about chain bread bakeries, but instead single entities.

Labor groups negotiated this so they probably have a better idea of why they wanted to leave the bare minimum at $16 rather than $20 there.
