I played 15 mins of it just now and it was straight up trash.

No lock on
No dodge
Harpies
Tank enemy health
Pawns and npcs talking over each other
Janky controls
Bad voice acting
No cinematic
No story

Great soundtrack during that time at least.

Steam says 9/10 with like 30k reviews. Was I scammed or was the beginning intentionally supposed to turn you off?

Neither? You just apparently kind of suck at action games, don't get the point of facing bosses, and got in a coma (or however you missed it having a story) while playing it.

I played 5 hours and gave up. I bought it for my switch. I want to try again, but it was a pain starting it last time.

It really does take a while until you understand what the game really wants you to do. It isnt conventional, but it really feels like you should be playing it like a janky western rpg. Except it isnt.

You could convince me better. The game wasnt hard at all. Just bad controls making it not fun.

I cannot help you there as I had no issues with the controls (PC w/ Switch Pro controller) at all. It felt relatively easy to control and I never struggled with anything on that front after completing the game + its DLC.

I didnt think the controls were hard at all either. Just really bad lol. Youre defending the game and yourself now instead of convincing me why you love it so much.

You put harpies as a reason that the game is trash, I see no reason to take this as something serious that I should care about any attempt at changing your mind.

Harpies is a pretty good reason. Any game that introduces an enemy with janky controls within the first 10 mins deserves a nod to bad game design. You havent attempted to give any input since your first post said I just suck at the game lol.

Fine. It has solid and easy to understand combat that is satisfying to do and isn't found elsewhere.

Yeah I played an hour or so before giving up on it also. It's not very good. It definitely interests me the way some mechanics work, but all of it put together and the shitty controls it's just... shit.

The controls are markedly dated. That is a common complaint of newcomers. The game also doesn't hold your hand in figuring out what's going on. There's a lot you can miss if you're not paying attention. It's an old game now, but a lot of what they had was innovative for the time and honestly still is. Nobody has been able to emulate what Dragons Dogma has.

This is not a WRPG. It's definitely a JRPG that takes from western games and it's not exactly the same kind of open world it was intended to emulate. The game's rushed nature has a lot to do with that.

All that noted, what I really want to convey is that Dragons Dogma is a very unique experience that plays like an ARPG in a lot of ways, takes its gameplay cues from JRPGs and takes its story cues from western high fantasy. There is no game like it. Theres a neat lore aspect to it, and the atmosphere of the maps areas is top notch. The difficulty curve is kind of steep, but it's very satisfying once you've mastered the games quirks and start becoming more powerful. Pawn system is very cool, the indirect interactions via pawns is still charming and fun, to put it plainly.

DD also always tries to challenge you. You can grind and push through the game but you WILL run into a wall eventually.

Finally, DD is the source of some gr8 memes. I hope you join us and learn that wolves ill like fire, Arisen.

And what is there to say? I played it to completion, hence where my take would be different. If you don't like it, don't play it. I don't actually care.

Play as a bow class (Strider, Ranger, Assassin) until you get the Forward Roll, there's your dodge (also has i-frames). They all unlock it at the same rank. Magick Archer can use it too but I wouldn't suggest playing that class early on because of it's stat gains. Assassin gets the most Attack increase per level. I never had a problem with the controls but I played it when it came out, so maybe if I picked it up for the first time today it'd be different.

Other than that, pawns do talk a lot and if you're looking for complex characters or a rich narrative, there isn't much here. The combat and the pawn system are the main draws, there's good variety among the classes and climbing on big monsters is always fun. It's definitely among the best combat of that generation imo. It also handles postgame and NG+ really well.

*Just to clarify, the Forward Roll is actually a dodge roll and you control the direction in which you roll. It's also technically a Dagger skill but the classes that unlock it can all use bows too, and the bow makes dealing with flying enemies a lot easier.

Plays nicely on steam deck. Its my go-to at this time
Hmm, id say to play the class you want til level 15. Just take every quest you can & complete them as best you can. Explore, save, push further.

Less pawns gives more experience
Pawns help party by their roles. If youre stuck, try a different pawn combo.

...Master all classes for them perks.

I always play Strider it's always fun going crazy with the daggers, shooting enemies and climbing on them for a long time as well. Controls don't feel janky at all and lock on isn't needed. I'm guessing you just played the tutorial and that's it?

It's a very easy game. Use a bow class. Work you way towards the big city. The game opens up from there. It should take less than a hour to get that far. You will pick up teleport stones at some point. When you finish the main game the dlc is the real endgame

It was kinda cpu heavy at one point. I had to upgrade from 6900k to 9900k to achieve consistent 144 fps. Before it'd drop to like the 80s in random areas
