https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2024/02/dont-fall-latest-changes-dangerous-kids-online-safety-act for more details on it.

The tl;dr of what this bill does is it requires every single site to request a Government ID from you to even view or use the website in question and you have to use your real name in just about everything. It'll also limit search results if you are deemed underage and be treated as such too. So imagine going on this very site and being unable to unless you have to give Fandom your government ID.

That is what will happen if this passes.

Because it doesn't. It's just a means for the religious right to control content that they see as "objectionable".

But calling it out is seen as a bad look, since on paper it's about protecting kids.

Right. What's worse is I don't see anything where it limits the junk ads. If anything, those should be regulated before anything else.

I disagree. Because everyone knows that the government isn't about protecting the kids when it buckles and whines about the notion of helping children born under struggling parents.

"think of the children" has long been used as a strong moral-based support grabber, especially by the religious right. they can use "the children" as support for whatever cause they want. when someone (rightfully) points out a bill does very little (usually closer to outright nothing) to protect children or even harms them, they can say "So you don't care about children?" and make the logical person look like the bad guy

I am of the opinion children absolutely do need protection. From the religious right, of course.

This isn't just social media, it's everything. Which means it's not going to pass if even social media ID requirements aren't passing (as it shouldn't). As the article states it's unconstitutional at its core.

Here in Mississippi and I imagine in Virginia and other states that have similar laws, you're required to use your ID to access certain adult sites. That's what the government wants.

Good way to blackmail people over their preferences or kinks. If you think Republicans won't do this and Democrats won't let them you're a fool.

It's a double-edged sword, but our society's litigious nature and proclivity to interpreting vaguely/poorly worded laws/mandates in whatever way is most beneficial to the corporation works to our benefit here.
If it just requires the website to verify the age of a user without further details, then a Yes/No box is quite literally "verifying it". It's not a very reliable way to truly verify it, but that's not our problem. If politicians want to require Real ID so they know what porn we watch (which is obviously what they're attempting), then make them put that in bold clear lettering in a follow up bill. Let everyone know exactly what they're pushing for.

Yes. Every time this sort of thing is pushed by religious conservatives it needs to be loudly broadcast that they're the ones who keep getting caught abusing children.

But the "liberal media" doesn't do that. For some reason.

Porn sites have already had the "are you 18" box for a long time, though I don't know if that has been voluntary.
No, it's required. I recall a few years back someone making a comment on their blog, that due to the content of their site they had to stick a simple tick box with "I am over 18" to comply with the law and avoid being taken down.

This mess is more complicated and has very little to do with protecting children, and more to do with more accurate tracking of what an individual is browsing, reading, viewing. As already stated, "for the children" is a blanket you can't argue against, as people will think you're a pedo/monster even if the law straight up makes it ok to abuse children, because majority don't look past the "it's to protect the children" part.

If it passes, then don't be surprised when VPNs are targeted next. This will also probably boil down to the site level. Meaning if you want to make an account to browse reddit or pop onto a blog site to read about the color blue, you gotta let billy no mates have your ID, a VPN will just make it look like you're in iceland while using a ohio license. I may be mistaken, but I read a vpn won't even work properly on a mobile device, it'll just ping the cell tower.
