MADISON, Wis. (AP) Wisconsins GOP-controlled Legislature on Tuesday passed legislative maps that were proposed by Democratic Gov. Tony Evers a move designed to prevent the liberal-controlled state Supreme Court from implementing maps that might be even worse for Republicans.

Republicans conceded defeat, while Democrats said they were afraid of being tricked.

It pains me to say it, but Gov. Evers gets a huge win today, Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said, adding that under the new maps, the Legislature will be up for grabs.

The Assembly and Senate passed the bill in quick succession Tuesday, sending it to Evers. Last week, he promised to sign his maps into law if the Legislature passed them with no changes. Republicans did tweak the language to ensure the new maps dont take effect until November, but its unclear if thats a dealbreaker for the governor. He did not return a message seeking comment Tuesday. His spokesperson, Britt Cudaback, tweeted after the votes that Evers position has not changed. She did not elaborate.

The political stakes are huge in the presidential battleground state, where Republicans have had a firm grip on the Legislature since 2011 even as Democrats have won statewide elections, including for governor in 2018 and 2022.

Democrats said that the Wisconsin Supreme Court should be allowed to implement the maps. Republicans said that voting for Evers maps, rather than waiting for the state Supreme Court to install maps that might be even better for Democrats, was their last best remaining option.

Republicans were not stuck between a rock and hard place, Republican state Sen. Van Wanggaard said in a statement. It was a matter of choosing to be stabbed, shot, poisoned or led to the guillotine. We chose to be stabbed, so we can live to fight another day.

Vos said at a news conference before the vote that passing the maps would be the end of costly litigation.

Was the threat made here that if these maps didn't pass, then worse (from the GOP's perspective) maps would be used instead?

Also, these are state-level maps, no? New federal maps when?

Goes to show how crucial that state supreme court election truly was for Wisconsinites. Remember, voting blue DOES matter.

I believe some Dems voted against it, because they didn't trust the Republicans. Evers shouldn't sign it.

My understand is they passed them to be implemented in November, when ideally they would be implemented immediately

the reason for the delay to November, is speaker Robin Vos is facing a recall threat, and would be significantly more susceptible to that under the new maps

in any case I hope dems stand their ground and the governor vetoes on those grounds

That's an odd way of saying democracy and fair representation won.

But Republicans only care about their power.

It reminds me of confederate slave owners whining about being dispossessed after the Civil War. Can't think why.

You mean, like, it will actually be possible for the other party to win should the voters vote for them?

Again, the man is talking about it now being possible for the will of voters to change the makeup of the Assembly, a change that will almost certainly never lead to Democrats ever having a majority in the Assembly. Nobody who honestly reads up about the gerrymandering in Wisconsin could find any of this to be anything other than shocking.

I how how tight they made that language. Wisconsin has tremendously powerful line item veto. I'm sure they spent a lot of time carefully choosing the letters of what they changed.

This is a legislature drawn map. Challenging it would either do nothing or result in maps drawn by the state supreme court to be used.

I'm hoping that the map get vetoed. It's still very favorable for Republicans and that's why they voted to approve it. If the supreme court has to pick one, they'll pick a more neutral map
