There's also the read where Wicked and later Frozen owe their success to Rent if you give it credit for Idina Menzel, but that's a little slewed.

it is but still does matter. i agree that it directly led to those two musicals too, and Manuel has been very explicit in saying that Rent was a heavy influence for Hamilton. so that's at least 3 major musicals it directly led into.

so yeah, i'll switch my Lion King to Rent.

Would have initially picked something else over Rent but a lot of y'all convinced me. Will not budge on Les Mis though. Idc if I'm a basic bitch this is one is the greatest pieces of media my gremlin eyes have consumed.

Loving the Hadestown praise in the thread too. One of the few times that I've liked something "before it was cool".

There have been some good points made here. Rent was also big enough to get a parody-song in Team America back in 2004 -- that's recognition of what "the big thing on Broadway" looked like to the eventual makers of The Book of Mormon.

My favorite musical Passing Strange is also much more in the vein of Rent than Wicked. I prefer Wicked to Rent, but I'm sold.

I honestly hate Rent. one of my least favorite musicals but it's not necessarily for the musical itself. More having to live through the obsession period long before I found a personal love for Musical Theater. However I can't deny that it belongs above Wicked.

Replace: Wicked for Rent as well.

Just noticed: if Hamilton makes it onto Mt. Rushmore, we'll get both Alexander and Lin-Manuel Miranda on the mountain. Most other musicals wouldn't feature their creator as their Rushmore-rep.

Hamilton really doesn't belong up there.

hamilton... probably doesn't but it's also hard to think of a broadway musical that managed to capture that wide a pool on a very unique and rapidly influential style, both for history (Six) and a kind of music rarely seen with musicals (hip hop). but there is absolutely recency bias on that.
