I could see an indie game like this. You try to paint a path up a mountain that the main character can traverse and then a little CPU hero tries to climb where you painted. You get more points for an efficient path or for getting them close enough to notice treasure. Different levels may give you different heroes with different jumping capabilities and tools.

I liked the way Mirror's Edge did it. They used red, but it was a natural part of the city's architecture, so it didn't feel that out of place. And you had the option to turn it off if you felt like you didn't need the guidance.

I agree it would have been better to be able to turn it off, but I also understand not thinking such a toggle needs to exist, and that people that don't like it should be able to just... Ignore such a minor part of the game.

I wouldn't have been mad either way, atleast.

It's extremely viable. It's probably no different than turning arrow mode on/off in Super Mario Odyssey, for example.

I really don't get what started that trend. Many games previously had been able to lead the player without stupidly obvious markings. While we're dealing with more realistic settings now, you can still prep the player for what to look for and make sure you don't double up on things that look climbable.

A toggle isn't going to do much when the game is designed specifically around yellow paint.

Not sure why people get so annoyed about it. Games have always followed a design language for you to follow. Red barrels don't actually explode if you shoot them.

If the cliffs were grey players would be trying to climb the rocks to the ledge because there's no actual reason Cloud himself cannot. You know you can't because the game tells you that you can't.

As games increase in fidelity and detail yellow still sticks out. It tells the player "You can interact with this" in a consistent way that can apply to several things across the entire game.

RE4 does it because there are barrels, crates and other stuff placed around the world that you can't touch.

FFVII Rebirth will be doing this because there will be numerous cliffs that you cannot climb.

This is off topic but I remember back in OG FFVII where I was in Cosmo Canyon and having that whole explanation about the meteor and then suddenly they put me in a big open space where I had to talk to the old man and I couldn't talk to him for some reason.

I kept trying to chat with him but it wouldn't let me, like I had trouble clicking on him with Cloud. One day I tried again but had given up for years and it worked but I had to stand in a specific spot......like very specific.
