Yeah. The only stellar pokemon from gen 2 that was easy to get (aka no trading bullshit) was Houndoom iirc. All the others were mediocre or bad >_>

There was no reason why Dark was Special and Ghost was Physical back then. They should have been swapped around.

And for that matter, same with Poison and Dragon.

Most Gen 2 additions are just trash. Slow, incomplete and some garbage movepools. Even the cool ones are often post game. Gen 2 just sucks in general

Even then, Houndour could only be found in Kanto in GSC, so you couldn't even use it until about 80% of the way through the game.

Honestly, Gen 2 seemed pretty scared of its new Pokemon not being well-received, what with many of them being hidden in obscure areas or Kanto, and gym leaders not even using new Pokemon of their types. Only half of the Johto gym leaders even have a Johto Pokemon on their team. Hell, Morty has two Gastly rather than a Misdreavus. There's also both a bug and a fighting gym, AND a fighting Elite 4 members, and not one of them uses Heracross.

I think the reasoning for Ghost being Physical back in the day was that it was intended to be a counter to the Psychic type, which always had a huge Special stat. This was kind of a pointless idea though since prior to GSC the only non-fixed-damage Ghost move was Lick, which was 20 base power, thus absolutely useless for any other purpose than trying to get a paralyze in. And by the time better Ghost moves were added like Shadow Ball, the Special stat had been split anyway.

No idea what the rationale was for making Dark a Special type, though, since literally all of the moves were physical in theme, the two biggest top-of-my-head examples being Bite and Crunch. Just didn't make any sense.

Yeah...locking non-Legends Johto Pokmon to the post-game in Kanto always felt like a scummy move. HGSS kinda remedied some of it, but locking Houndour behind the Safari Zone and its weird mechanics wasn't enough in my opinion.

Misdreavus and Larvitar have it the worst though. You don't even get these Johto Pokmon until 5-10 minutes from beating Red. Crystal added Larvitar to the Celadon Game Corner...but both really should have been obtainable before the Elite Four.

Its fairly well documented that the games didn't have the best development cycle and they was a lot of hacking around to make it work. Gen 3 was when the games got the polish that reflected how big of a success it was.

My one saving grace from gen 2 and physical ghost typing: Curselax dominating with Shadow Ball

Honestly I think I liked casual pokemon more before the phys/spec split? Sure, there's some types that sort of ended up on the weird side of things in gens 1-3 but it was more interesting to me than the world afterwards where basically all pokemon just have the strongest STAB attacking moves, phys/spec depending on their stats, matching their type(s)

Bad typing vs stat spread was still possible to work around too. Gengar and Gyarados both also had typings that went against what their stats wanted them to do (Gyarados did having the flying type, but he had no flying moves lol), but they still turned out to be good thanks to a strong movepool + good stats.

Sneasel unfortunately couldn't get neither of those 2 things.

Gyarados going from 100 special in gen 1 to like 60 in gen 2 hurt my soul lol.

I kinda get it. Like trying to work around a pokemon's weakness and creatively use their toolkit to beat opponents is fun. But at the same time, shit like Sandslash and Electrode not learning any stab moves natively, or pokemon like Sneasel just getting utterly shafted by their stats and moveset does suck though.

Shit like gen 1 Aerodactyl having amazing stats but literally no moves besides Hyper Beam and Fly does suck

Yeah johto does not have a lot of good pokemon to its name. Girafarig,Houndoom, Murkrow, Suicune, Ampharos, Lanturn, and Skarmory are good.

and you had to get it into its 50s to fully evolve it. So they put a monster with such a high evolution right at the end....

also, I don't know anything about meta but Scizor is my favorite pokemon of all time. It just looks so badass...and I had no one to trade with..

Yep. And to top it off, the Elite 4 was the hardest in this game because your main team was likely to be shitmons with shit movepools. Good luck getting past Lance's three fucking Dragonites with the shit maingame mons and without doing research ahead of time.

I think Gen 1's is easier. Bruno is a nonissue and Agatha has awful moves. Lorelei and Lance are the only 2 trainers that are threats

It was the second game I beat, the e4 were fairly easy. It's just grinding that high with the bad level curve.

Basically all of the things people complained about in this topic in regards to the gen 2 games (Dark being special while Ghost was physical, bad availability for some of the new Johto Pokemon, a lot of Pokemon having bad movepools and lacking STAB attacks) this ROM hack fixes, on top of plenty of other fixes and quality of life changes. I can't recommend it enough.

I still need to look at that. I've been playing Crystal Clear a lot

There was a dude that pit all of the trainers together on Youtube. Gen 2 came bottom across the board, minus Whitney.

Mate, Feraligatr solos the entire thing. Who gives a crap about how Sentret is trash if the E4 is like 10 levels too low and no one is forcing you to use Sentret?

It was still a broken mon in gen 2 without that because of its stats and move pool.

10 levels too low from what? Your team is also low-leveled in comparison. The E4 in this game is more like mid-late game than a true end game, considering the Kanto content.

Unless you're talking about a predetermined Feraligatr solo, which I assume most people didn't do... yeah, Dragonites are gonna fuck you up. Especially since one of them knows Thunder which would wreck your level 40 Feraligatr

Curselax doesn't even run Shadow Ball. It usually runs Earthquake or Special coverage instead.
