I like Xanadu (1980).

Struggling artist Sonny Malone (Michael Beck) is trapped in a dull job painting album covers. He is instantly attracted to Kira (Olivia Newton-John), an anonymous woman randomly photographed in the background of one of his assignments, but no one is able to identify her. Visiting the auditorium where the cover was shot, Sonny finds the mysterious beauty, an ageless Greek muse, who encourages him to team up with old-fashioned Danny McGuire (Gene Kelly) to build a roller-skating disco.

It has a 30% score on Rotten Tomatoes. "Not even spandex and over-the-top musical numbers can save Xanadu from questionable acting, unimpressive effects, and a story unencumbered by logic." Along with Can't Stop the Music, it was the inspiration for the Golden Raspberry Awards.

I like it because it's got music by ELO and Olivia Newton-John, and a gorgeous animated sequence created by Don Bluth. The exterior shots for Xanadu were filmed at the Pan-Pacific Auditorium, a Streamline Moderne landmark in Los Angeles that burned down in 1989.

This was Gene Kelly's final movie.

My favorite movie of all time is Kung Pow, which is at 13% on Rotten Tomatoes lol

If we're talking about legit "so bad, it's good" movies, I guess Rubber is my vote.

If that's the criteria, I've got a laundry list of favorite bad movies. So many good movies don't get the recognition they deserve, either from audiences or critics.

One of the first that comes to mind is Spider-Man 3. That movie does not deserve the hate it gets. It's certainly guilty of trying to do too much due to executive meddling, but what we wound up getting was very good, and Topher Grace being cast as a dark parallel to Tobey as Peter was brilliant. (And it's pretty common knowledge by now, but the dance scene was meant to be cringey. Peter Parker is a giant dweeb, and even his dark persona is a dweeb's idea of what a cool guy looks like.)

The Apple is a must watch imo. 27% on Rotten Tomatoes. It was written in the late 70s, came out 1980, and the movie takes place in 1994. It's a dystopian musical.

Xanadu really isn't a bad movie, per se. It's a mostly mediocre (but enjoyable) one that suffered from terrible reviews because it's basically a disco-influenced movie released at a time when everyone hated disco. It would have been far better received if it had been released about 2-3 years earlier.

Kung Pow isn't really a "bad" movie, either. It's very well produced. It just suffers because it's a goofy comedy and critics will always shit on those.

Stuff like this mostly just underscores why critic reviews are kind of worthless garbage (and why review aggregator sites are generally meaningess). They usually bring in a lot of external baggage and favor overly pretentious stuff versus stuff that will actually appeal to the average audience. A lot of critics are under the assumption that film should be "art", and that "true art" should be mostly inaccessible. Because that allows them to feel superior about themselves for "getting it". Unlike those unwashed pleb masses.

Rubber isn't "so bad it's good", it's "so bad it's even worse".

I think forcing prisoners to watch Rubber would be considered a human rights violation.

Depends on your definition.

A movie that most people think is bad but I unironically think is good? Matrix Revolutions. The battle scenes in that movie were a highlight of the entire series and no one will be able to convince me otherwise.

A movie that is bad but that I love for being bad? The closest I get to that is the original Mortal Kombat. I wouldn't call it a bad movie, but it's definitely campy and cheesy and I love the hell out of it for it. The movie doesn't take itself too seriously and it's a tonne of fun.
