No mess. No, every multiblade razor shaves too clean, where the hair follicle ends up below the surface of my skin. Im Black and have curly hair, so it ends up growing back into my skin. The last foil shaver I had was an Andis that also cut too close. And single blade razors require a lot of trial and error to find how many passes are good enough. As far as work, the only time its a concern is on my reserve weekend. But even the military doesnt require baby bottom smooth unless youre in basic training, a school, or an inspection. No one is going to come rub their hands across your face unless they want to be put on the ground forcefully lol. At my civilian job, well I just wouldnt work for an employer that regulated my facial hair. Imo the difference is incredibly small. Still looks clean shaven, even if there's a bit of stubble. More than that leads to ingrown hairs for me. Everyone's different of course. I know (black) guys that can do every other day. Another thing to be very conscious of with curly hair is the direction of growth. Cheeks, chin and neck can all grow in different directions at the same time.
