Is this okay? Is it progressive? Should we applaud streaming platforms for unbridling content restrictions of traditional television delivery to put in such scenes without compunction?

Does showing people fucking contribute to narrative value?

That depends on the narrative I'd say. Like the infamous scene in Monster's Ball is def important to the narrative.

Unironically it probably depends on who is having sex. If it fits the 'cishet' label then people online will shit on it. If it doesn't fit that label it'll likely be championed instead.

From a movie watching perspective though there isn't really a need to show direct genital interaction.

That's not anything new though. Lots of shows and movies have depicted sex. They just keep it softcore and never show the actual penetration

Basic cable channels weren't allowed to show sex/nudity, but anything that was in a higher tier like HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, etc. could do whatever they wanted to do.

So having such scenes is not new or unusual for premium subscription-based content.

Well we haven't reached that point but I did just see an Amazon Prime show that had a (honestly somewhat arbitrary) scene of intercourse. Nude and there was thrusting and grunting, no bones about it (well...maybe one bone).

There was also sideboob/nipple but my stance on female breasts is already known.

Does mass wanton violence contribute to the narrative. If you're not also asking this there's a problem.

You're thinking about Cinemax, which used to be referred to a Skinemax for their late night movies featuring a bevy of middle-aged actresses with extreme breast implants doing phony grinding in sex scenes that were spaced every 15 minutes or so in their movies. It was its own softcore industry of sorts.

So am I the only one who used to call out their dad when you find out that Cinemax is suddenly a part of the cable package? From a movie selection, HBO blew Cinemax out of the water but had considerably less late night softcore porn. It's the cable TV version of "I swear I buy Playboy to read the articles!"

My dad usually got most of the channels, as watching movies was his main hobby. Many of the channels had their own takes on sexualized programming. HBO had a series that ran for years called 'Real Sex' that explored anything that wasn't basic coitus. Show Time I think had a promotion with Suicide Girls for a while. I remember being mildly surprised flipping through channels when I saw a former contestant on SyFy's Face Off doing nude shoots for SG.

Honestly, I'm kinda sick of the scenes but it's not new. Having it shoehorned in to damn near every "serious" show got tired ages ago to me though.

Are dumb takes a habit? Also, get at me with this nonsense when a 'non-traditional' one doesn't get called controversial or even dangerous because of puritanical reactionaries.

There was a lot of those shows in the infancy age of original shows for Streaming platforms because they were essentially trying to show off what they could do with what Television couldn't do. Honestly now, I hate sex scenes especially ones that go on for way too long and only put a halt on the actual plot of the show. Sense 8 was the biggest offender of this, I swear they had an orgy scene that went on for like 10 minutes and it was awkward as fuck.

Interestingly from what I've seen it seems that it tends to be used more negatively such as showing the character being "loose" or showing the parties being uncomfortable with it more often than as a conclusion or showcase of a positive relationship, the way climatic kisses are like.

Because Americas origins lie in pilgrims who were kicked out of Europe for being religious nuts.

Here in America we feel the need to control people's sexuality and what sexual content they have access to.

LOL, your imagination is definitely running wild. It's nowhere near as graphic as all that. It was definitely more artistic than pornographic.
But sure, I can see how that scene would make a lot of people uncomfortable.

They're stupid too. There's a bit of horseshoe theory at the two extremes. But, again, actual genital interaction isn't really needed for movies.
