Snow White
Ariel
Belle
Elsa

I feel like Snow White, Ariel, and Elsa are pretty indisputable. There are some solid choices for Belle's spot, but in the end, I feel like Belle is just too beloved and recognizable. It wouldn't feel right giving her spot to either a more classic (Cinderella, Aurora) or modern (Jasmine, Mulan, Moana, Tiana) princess.

Snow White
Cinderella
Ariel
Elsa

I favor Ariel as the Renaissance rep due to being part of the movie that started the Renaissance in the first place, plus Part Of Your World continues to be the blueprint of the Disney "I Want" song.

I don't know about this Elsa technically not being a Disney princess, but I frankly don't care. She belongs there.

Yeah, Snow White may have been first, but Cinderella absolutely popularized the concept and became the "stereotypical" princess.

Jasmine and Belle are a year apart.

I feel like Jasmine definitely belongs on there for breaking the color barrier.

Cinderella
Elsa
Ariel
Jasmine

Snow White may be the original but if I'm thinking a princess, Cinderella is the better representation, complete with Disney using her for everything marketing to this day with their logo and theme park. People think of Snow White in her more regular clothes, yellow skirt, dwarves, and all that; people think castle, the dress, and royalty with Cinderella in large part due to Disney marketing. It's also just plain the better known Grimm story which helps with the "ACTUALLY..." crowd.

Elsa is the same thing only modern day, a musical, and no Grimm story.

Ariel for starting the Disney princess trend in the 90s and her entire story is literally "I'm a princess."

Jasmine because she picked up where Ariel left off, complete with "I'm a princess" as the entire plot of the story, but expanded in a way the others didn't: success in television, fashion, and sequels. Sure they tried a little mermaid tv show but that didn't really take off the same way and was like a third of episodes and wasn't nearly as popular. And sure they had other sequels but Return of Jafar is the biggest sequel people remember and like universally. And then you get to wider culture and, well, off the shoulder + midriff exposed may be a 90s look but Jasmine made every girl want to wear that too. So while Ariel took the 90s Disney princess stage, Jasmine refined it and found greater success.

Yeah, I wanted to point out that it is kinda lame that my Rushmore is all white, and Jasmine is a suitable pick to change that. My problem with Jasmine is that she takes a clear backseat to Aladdin, whereas Belle is her movie's lead. Throw in Genie as well, and Aladdin has too many memorable characters for Jasmine to stand out as much as some other princesses.

I actually think Mulan is getting slept on quite a bit. She was the first Disney Princess whose story didn't feature romantic pursuit as a focal point. Honestly, her movie was brilliant in the way it subverted that trope - Mulan starts as a tale about a girl getting pressured into becoming a respectable wife, except she fails miserably before the plot goes "nope she's gonna win a war instead."

I think that's why people don't think of Mulan as a princess. She doesn't fit any of the tropes, which is a great thing in the overall picture, but it works against her here.

And while Jasmine isn't the star of the movie, she's plenty memorable. I wouldn't let that be the reason not to include her.

Snow White
Cinderella
Ariel
Elsa

Even though Belle should be there IMO because she's the best, it seems people don't care about her anymore. Snow White is the og. Cinderella is probably the most famous. Ariel has the unique visual recognition for being a mermaid (and stops it from being all white), and Elsa is the modern iconic princess.

Disney themselves treats Jasmine as second class. Its rare to see her without Aladdin and she is overshadowed by not just Aladdin but Genie.

I would not include her.

while true Jasmine and her being a princess is also literally the entire plot of the movie.
why is Jafar a villain? well he's trying to become Sultan and is going to marry the princess to do so.
why does Aladdin act or what are his wishes based upon? becoming a suitable candidate so he can get with the princess.
multiple Genie wishes are to be favorable to the princess or remove people from the princess.
movie ends with the princess being able to decide what to do.

it's less that she's secondary and more that she's quite literally the character who's also the plot device. a humanoid macguffin if you will. but hey, as a result can't have the movie without her.

As a lifelong Ariel fan, I think Halle Bailey did a fantastic job capturing the character's spirit. I honestly hope Disney parks start showcasing a black Ariel in homage of her performance.

  • Cinderella. Her castle's the logo, she has more relevant and recent appearances than most of the other "classic" princesses, and I like her more than SW.
  • Ariel. Formerly non-human rep, herald of the renaissance.
  • Elsa. I hate her, but on strict popularity she deserves it.
  • Sofia the First. I want a rep who originates from somewhere outside the Disney theatrical movies, so why not go with the princess whose entire reason for existing is "let's learn lessons from other Disney princesses"?
HMs: Belle (personal fave, but I think the first 3 are better examples), Mira Nova (if Sofia was about anything other than learning to be a princess, Mira would take her place), Adrien Agreste (didn't want to bother checking eligibility).

I am going to go ahead and allow subsidiaries here, so Princess Leia, Neytiri, Shuri and Anastasia all count (among others), however there are so many good candidates from canon I am not worried about people going too off the rails here. Remember that the "princess" does not necessarily need that exact title.

Change Snow White to Cinderella.

You guys have convinced me. Cinderella is almost as old as Snow White (1950 vs 1937), but she probably has an even more recognizable look, and there's no denying the impact of her castle serving as THE LOGO. She also has a story more fitting to be retold and far less offensive for modern audiences. And this last point might feel a tad ridiculous, but she's also the first major princess to receive a wardrobe change, which became a signature of most Disney Princesses from Aurora through Elsa. Cinderella was the first to accessorize, her glass slipper serving as the iconic cherry on top.

This was somewhat my thought. Snow White was first but Cinderella set more of a blueprint for the modern princess. Her impact on "princess" was larger than Snow White.
