I barely remember the 2nd movie but one thing about the first that I enjoyed was Carreys utter commitment to the role. In fact, unlike a lot of his movies, I felt like it wasn't just him being him, but rather actually embodying the flamboyant wicked Eggman.

I do agree but he did really love the character and had a lot of fun. He's shown to be excited in numerous interviews on it and would even come up with ideas to the producers and writers. So to me it's not surprised. To me his retirement came off as "If I think I'll have fun with the role I'll do it but if it's not something I am interested in I have no desire to take acting gigs for money."

It makes sense, I thought so too initially but didn't want to jinx it

Probably. They're already making a Knuckles spinoff, aren't they?

But more importantly, I wonder what the 4th movie will be about. They'll probably skip stuff like Heroes and Riders and maybe go right to 06.

I'm thinking they'll go Sonic 06 as well. Although the movies haven't done Metal Sonic yet, right? Heroes could be a good Sonic 4.

Heroes had a massive cast though, so I wonder if they'll introduce all of the supporting characters like Vector, Rouge, Cream, etc.,

Not really. Shadow is more a rival/aloof ally then an enemy.

i loved the dynamic between Carrey's Robotnik and Elba's Knuckles in Sonic 2.

I mean, you can't exactly do a proper Sonic Adventure 2 adaptation without Eggman.

Just hope they don't give us an incomplete movie and we have to watch Sonic and Knuckles to get the full experience.

You didn't have to see 2 though. The logo for 3 literally has half of Shadow's colors. I never watched any of the Sonic movies and when I saw the logo for 3 I realized Shadow was in it

Im glad that Jim Carrey is coming back. The only alternative I wouldve accepted wouldve been a CG Robotnik voiced by Mike Pollock.

Thank god. I loved the first two (other than the dumb wedding side plot in 2) but if he wasnt returning I was considering skipping it.

The best part of Sonic 1 is still them casting Neal McDonough just to have Jim Carrey shit all over him for like one scene.

I mean, Sonic Adventure 1 basically implies the whole Eggman being a name from Sonic, but he's primarily referred to as Eggman, even personally, after that. I think most know that this was basically a result of consolidating the JP & US continuities, but Sonic Frontiers' Egg Memos are the first instance where it's explicitly confirmed that Eggman simply leaned into the name to flip Sonic's intent.

Yesssss, I hoped he might. I know he said something about stepping back from acting, but he clearly had a lot of fun making the other two Sonic movies. It would be missing something crucial without him.

There need to be a scene where Sonic and Tails are sneaking around a lab and get caught by Robotnik.

From the "main" games there's also those idiots from Lost World and that idiot from 06. Maybe the idiot from Forces but I never played far enough to learn his story, he might just be a glorified metal sonic.

To be fair a lot of final bosses are just "Robotnik fucked around and now a world-destroying monster is on the loose". It wouldn't be hard to have an original villain in that role and keep Chaos/BioLizard/DarkGaia/Time Devourer of whatever else as the "face" of the conflict for marketing.

There are no reoccuring enemies in the franchise aside from Eggman, there have been several non Eggman affiliated antagonists tho starting from classic era

The battle bird armada who ended up in conflict with Tails
Wendy Witchcart and the Witchcarters who ended up in conflict with Tails
Fang the Hunter who ended up in conflict with Sonic in his debut game Triple Trouble even through he wasn't affiliated with Eggman and Knuckles who at the time thought Sonic was an enemy

That's it for classic era for the modern era non Eggman enemies that kept coming back didn't exist until the Deadly Six, through so far they've only returned as antagonists in the IDW comics

the closest thing to a reoccurring antagonist outside of the Deadly Six in modern sonic is Eggman Nega he turned 3 times before Sega got rid of him, however his debut and return the first two times he was working with Eggman, the other two times he's actively antagonizing both the protagonists and Dr.Eggman

There's just no beating Eggman as far as the fanbase is concerned same with Sega mainly because all their other bad guys aren't nearly as popular or liked as Eggman or they don't have the will or desire or demand for a non eggman enemy as a main stay at least in the games, IDW comics have several reoccurring antagonists Mimic the infiltrator, Clutch the Possum, Rough and Tumble the skunk brothers, Surge the ternec and Kit the finnox, it used to have another enemy named Starline a duck billed platypus but he was killed off two years ago because they had run out of ideas for him.

IIRC the SA2 manual has his name as Dr Ivo Eggman Robotnik.

Besides his grandfathers name is Gerald Robotnik.

Honestly I didn't look closely enough at the logo to notice that (basically just glanced while scrolling past the first time), but yeah now it's incredibly obvious

Coolest thing about the logo is that its a reimagining of the SA2 logo.

Lol, yeah, it's kinda weird. I'll be honest though, they're more family movies than actual Sonic movies. Entertaining and well-made, but doesn't focus as much on like...the actual characters and worlds they're from as they should. Sonic 2's a bit better on that and 3's rumored to have even more focus on the game characters. They're worth checking out, IMO.

True, but outside of the manual & the relations to Gerald & Maria, it doesn't really come up too often, much like how Tails' name being Miles almost never comes up outside manuals, screen selects, & minor details like his wanted poster in SA2's Mission Street stage.
