I use to be very critical of AI work , and people calling themselves artist. And not I will not start calling myself that or anything. But I will no longer look sideways at people who do. Because it was their ideas who made it, and they just used a different tool. Below are some of things that I made. I come up with these ideas they did not come from the either and just pop up. So should it be art. Below are some of my work. And below my work is an art call the Fountain by Marcel Duchamp. And it is just urinal. How is that more art than AI. Some dude just went to hardware store and got a urinal.

Note I am not one of these guys who want to say that they are an artist. So don't worry about that. But at the same time. I am no longer going to say they are wrong. If the picture above me can be art, why not AI ?

I play music so I could be missing something, something good at art can you tell me if I am wrong ?

Its art, but I would specify it as AI generated art. Sorta like if you wanna call competitive gaming e-sports, thats fine. But keep that e- in front of it.

And I wouldnt call the people entering the prompts as artists.

I would say that art isn't just about "presentation". There's background and intentionality around "Fountain" that contribute to it as an art piece. And different people have different dividing lines for "art" within visual art regardless. Not every thing that I personally draw is art, but I might take a collection of little sketches done on gum wrappers on flights and put context around it and present it a certain way such that I am at least *claiming* it's art. Hypothetically you could put some appropriate context around your images and try to call them art as well, but if it's just "this is a generated image of an anime looking character" that's not even you presenting it as art, if that makes sense?

Yeah if I'm a rich person and I commission an artist to draw something and the picture is great, I don't get "artist points" for telling them exactly how I want it to look. Prompts are the same thing even if there's faster turn around/feedback.

It's like pseudo-art.

It's fun to play with but I still don't want to see it replace real artists.

I don't care one way or another.

Agreed. But it's annoying when it makes an otherwise great image and then ruins it by giving the subject eight equally-long fingers or three breasts* or crossed eyes or something.

I would really like to see AI spit out a PSD or something that can be edited further.

Also want to see more image-to-image tools.

For example, I feed the AI model my BG3 character and then I ask it to spit out chibi anime memes of her.

If you want to call getting lucky in getting something that is not shit "art", then I do not know what to say.

I think we get too hung up on what is and is not 'art'. As if things need that coveted label for legitimacy. (Many gamers have a huge chip on their shoulder about this).

I wouldn't worry about it. Enjoy things that are beautiful, challenging, awe-inspiring, frightening, inspirational, etc. for what they are, and let others spend time debating what to call them.

AI doesn't create, it obeys. it churns out "art" for people who can't be bothered to learn or practice creating something for themselves. i can't explain what that urinal piece is exactly supposed to be or represent or mean, but things like dada and found art exist because they spurred a feeling or a thought in the creator. you can argue the inspiration and feeling that goes into the prompts to make AI pictures are artistic, having come from a human mind of course, but the image that's been generated by algorithms trained off of other people's collective work is simply not art, fundamentally. it's the result of a tool ultimately used to cut corners and far, far most often produce large quantities of hollow, self-indulgent tripe.

i guess you can say art begins at conception. then from there, now you either create something, be it written, music, drawn, painted, etc to produce fully realized art, or generate something the easy way with none of the heart and soul that goes into creating something with your own mind and hands. you remove the human element and sever that connection. most people probably don't care about the spiritual element, and i can't make them appreciate something the way i do, but i feel to extend the definition of "art" to encompass AI and the derivative facsimiles it produces, cheapens whatever "art" is even supposed to mean to a living person. art is supposed to showcase human spirit, emotion, creativity- not demonstrate how lazy and technology-dependant we've become

AI is great for smut, that's for damn sure. It's think when it gets better, it will be great for creative people who don't have the artistic abilities to draw/paint/whatever. It's art, but computer generated art.

I don't "get" most abstract art like that either, but I try not to crap on it too much unless it some straight bullshit like drawing one squiggly line on a floor tile and selling it for thousands/millions of dollars...or just a urinal. That just makes me think of this:

AI is good for that idea in your head, but your fingers are too stupid to make.

And the results are generally good enough.

Sometimes though it's not really art. Just trolling and the "artist" is secretly laughing to themselves to see how long it takes anyone to figure out.

Of course it's art.

It's usually not very meaningful art. Or very good art. But art doesn't have to be good or meaningful to still be art.

That being said, I wouldn't really even classify it as "AI art" either. It's not really being made by AI. The AI won't make you a picture unless you tell it to. It can only follow instructions. We don't have rogue AIs wandering around making art to fill galleries on their own. The AI is more akin to the paintbrush, and the user coming up with the prompts is the artist. Again, not necessarily a good artist, but you don't have to be good at it to be an artist.

While I am lol, I was thinking of making a fox cut hero, character. She has since changed into a skunk, and more or less a funny. But I using AI to help me make concepts of her. And it really helped the process.

This, please. Especially since some of the smut I enjoy is really niche, even by furry standards.

I think it'll be fantastic once it evolves past the point where you can just "tell" it was made an AI
