For the most part, this. It's fun to fly around for a short while, but most of the countryside beyond Hogwarts(Hogsmeade to an extent as well) is just sort of there. So the draw is mostly the Hogwarts setting, and flinging spells about.
And its not like either of those are that fum. Hogwarts is just a smaller "collect random bullshit" area and you have no interaction with it besides the heavily scripted missions. Lessons are glorified fetchquests past the first few. Combat quickly becomes Simon Says with "red spell for the red enemy" and there's very little room for player expression.

While it's understandable to not get on the main GOTY list, other hits like Armored Core 6, Diablo 4, and Starfield didn't make it either, not getting nominated in any secondary category either starts looking suspicious.

Only thing it maybe should've popped into was soundtrack (it was nominated for a Grammy), however there are always a ton of great soundtracks.

You figure for musical variety there's always going to be a big adventure game, a top RPG, a top rhythm game, something popular like a Souls game, a slightly lower tier original game the critics loved, etc. there's just no room for an established non-gaming IP in a year like this one.

My GOTY was Resident Evil 4, followed shortly by BG3. Honorable indie mention goes to Aliens Dark Descent, that game was a blast.

Yeah cause they are good and interesting. Not complete milquetoast like Hogwarts is. The only thing it has going for it is the IP behind it and filled with fan service. Everything else is so generic it might as well not even exist.
Eh I guess its a preference thing. If you put Horizon, Ghosts, etc in front of me I wouldnt put them much above Hogwarts. They all feel like the same massive open world, going from camp to camp and clearing it out while collecting random stuff and checking boxes off a list. Im not saying any of these games are bad, theyre just burning me out.

I actually liked it. It had a charm that was in tone with the world n whatnot. While it was a cool game, I dont think it should be a contender

The weakest part of Hogwarts for me was the RPG-aspect when I initially thought it was gonna be one of its best aspects. Regardless of which house you chose, the story and the characters you'd interact with would basically be the same. Instead of allowing you the freedom to pick your own classes and form of magic to study, the game always forces you to attend the same classes to learn a spell in a very linear-progression type approach. I did like how there was a quest that would unravel differently depending on which house you chose. If you were Hufflepuff, you straight up got to go to Azkaban. That was cool. The game needed a lot more of that divergent storytelling but you can tell the developers really just wanted to tell a linear story and just plop you into it for the ride. As for the open world, it was alright. I wasn't expecting Elden Ring but it started to get pretty monotonous once I got a broom. And fuck the lockpicking mechanic once you get Alohomora...

It was a 6/10 but could've easily been an 8 if they leaned more on the open world RPG aspect. To be honest, it just felt like a Harry Potter game with not-Harry Potter.

It's an above average game, but 2023 is one of the best years in gaming ever. There are so many games this year that are way better. If it was released in 2022 (one of the worst years for gaming) it would have gotten a nominee.

if it was a different year it would have been nominated. 2023 has too many good games in it. Hogwarts should have released a DLC to get itself back into the conversation

It's weird because I thought they were going to in order to add Quidditch.

Aside from being cookie cutter open world its also noticeable they cut content everywhere and didnt even hide it, like that quest where you could to get help but that system was cut. At least play it on PC with the mods that reinstate shit but on console you got half a game.

Literally nobody talked about this game to the point where I forgot it released this year. Same as how barely anybody talks about GOW Ragnarok and it's not quite been a year yet. I think games that nobody cares about after a negligible amount of time was probably not as good of a game as people thought at the time, or just bad, really.

thats a shame because Ragnarok was awesome
