Current Events > My mum's back in hospital. I'm terrified

Suspected stroke, confirmed gastrointestinal bleeding and blood loss. Head injuries from a probable fall. Crashing at her place tonight because its close to the hospital and to look after her cats.

Shes been on blood thinners for a blood clot in her heart, caused by the AF. Weve been waiting for the clot to go so she can get treated for the AF. Some of the clot seems to have caused the stroke.

The fall seems to have happened yesterday morning, and she then slept until her friend across the road came over to check on her - I hadnt been able to ring her this morning because huge telecommunications outage, so Id asked the friend to knock on her door.

I don't know what to say except, I hope she will get better.

I'm very sorry. My mom could be in a similar situation if she were to fall. She was recently diagnosed with AF and put on blood thinners. I don't think she has any clots, or not that the doctors were aware of. So I empathize greatly with your situation and I hope she recovers.

Going in to see her in an hour and a half, apparently shes getting scoped atm to check out if the bleeding Is from gi damage.

Yesterday she was extremely confused, couldnt form a complete sentence, was trailing off and word salading.

Didnt know where she was, when it was or why she was there.

Was absolutely fucking terrifying.

Visiting her today, shes probably at 90% cognitively. Some lost words, but that could easily be fatigue from the blood loss and head injury.

No more news about the MRI results, but shes probably going to be transferred to neurology today.

I'm sorry you're all going through this.

I'm hoping for the best.

I'm sorry this happened, TC. Glad to hear she's better than yesterday, though. I hope she continues to get better.

That's what happened to my Dad when he was having his first stroke. It's very scary, but from the way you describe it, she's recovered significantly since then. Hopefully things keep getting better for her and she continues to receive good care from the hospital.

Thanks, the gastro and neuro doctors have been incredible, and the nurses as always have been incredibly caring and responsive. Its nice being told everything clearly and effectively, and not being resented for asking questions that wouldnt occur to my mum. The heart doctors continue to be incommunicado and aloof. Heard more about the options to deal with the clot in her heart from the neurologist than the heart dr

Still a bit vague - the dr told her to wait to take her warfarin until he called with her blood test results. She took them anyway while I was tidying up her front path.

Im hoping shes just still a bit fuzzy from the blood loss last week.

I'm happy for you that she's back home. It is a little worrisome to take blood thinners after being told not to, but I can see how she would do that out of force of habit -- especially if she's not in her usual state of mind.
