Not going to recommend any particular manufacturer but revolvers are great first handguns. Easy maintenance and, unlike a more modern semiauto, you can leave it loaded if you are worried about home defense.

Smith & Wesson M&P Shield is a good option for a beginner. Do a search for best handguns, or top 10 handguns of 2023.

Do not get a cheap gun, stay mid range for price as you are looking for reliable but not break the bank.

Do you have anyone you know who is a gun owner that you could talk to ?

Are you looking to get a revolver or a semi auto ?

M&P Shield is a great choice.

Its got (probably) the best quality to price ratio of any pistol out there for an entry level shooter.

They are very easy to find, so you wont have to join a wait list. Probably any Bass Pro Shop can get you a new one lickety split.

9mm ammo is also very easy to get your hands on now. So you can get a lot of trigger time in and train with it.

I also recommend a CPL course (your state may even require it), and some follow up training classes.

A semi auto. I've been to the range exactly once, rented a glock and a luger carbine, wasn't really a fan of the pistol due to me being left handed and it being basically a right handed gun with right handed instructors, the rifle was much easier for me to load and shoot

You could opt for a rifle if you felt more comfortable with that, always go with what you enjoyed shooting and were comfortable with.

Do you know what exactly the luger carbine was ?, the make and model along with what kind of ammo it fired ?

I don't remember the exact name, i know it was semi auto, had a scope, shot .22 LR i think. Let me try to find it on the website.

I want a pistol because you can't conceal carry a rifle and I really need one, ok well not *REALLY* need one like at the moment its life or death, but after running into someone i nearly put in prison I decided maybe its best if i at least have an option to defend myself should these things turn violent. So I'm gonna take a training course on pistols, i'm getting my firearms ID card and then ill apply for a CCW permit.

If it helps, i'm in NJ so we have some pretty damn strict gun laws and that would explain my general lack of knowledge around guns, all my knowledge comes from gaming lol

Actually i think this is the rifle I shot

See if another range has an M&P Shield 9mm for you to rent and try, and you need to practice a lot if you are going to have an EDC gun.

Living in a crap state with lots of restrictions is also a problem but unless you can move to a more free state you will need to be very careful.

Assuming you have no real brand preferences and just want something that can fill the most roles then id default to a Glock 19. Not my personal favorite, but they are reliable, parts and magazines are everywhere, not incredibly expensive and you can conceal carry it decently assuming you arnt under 5 feet tall.

i'm fine with the state having restrictions, although a lot of them are currently getting challenged. Hell it was damn near impossible to get guns here until they overturned the law like a year or two ago, and they also challenged the CCW requirement that you have $300,000 in insurance so that's gone too, next is the rule about where you can conceal carry.

I don't think I'll really need to practice a ton, I learn pretty fast and i'm a surprisingly good shot going by the few shots i put up at the range, but i'll definitely take a pistol course/NRA CCW course and practice loading/unloading and my stance at home. The gun won't actually be loaded obviously but i'll put rounds in the mag, see how fast i can load the mag, and unloading a loaded gun(finger off the trigger and safety on).

The best case scenario is that I won't have to use the gun but i'll go to the range at least once every 2 months and get some shots in and practice.

Go to a range and try some out. Everyone has a favorite and a million people will try and sell you a glock, but I hate the grip angle on glocks. hate hate hate, and a lot of people I know do too, so try one out first. I like variants of the 1911 or for polymers a springfield XD .45 compact is my favorite. I think they run 450ish.

It's my favorite conceal carry wep for a few reasons. It comes with a few different mags to give it a compact vs standard frame, the grip safety is nice for something I want to keep concealed and makes awkward drawing mishaps during a stressful situation less likely to be an issue. The trigger mechanism is worlds better than other polymer pistols i've tried. For something you're keeping close to you for a reliable everyday workhorse, thats my recommendation to at least try at the range.

A lot of people like the M&P but I didn't like it as much, especially not for the price. I didn't like the grips, personally.

Don't buy anything that looks like it belongs in a halo game or from Kel-tec.

The generic Glock recommendations are probably solid to listen to.

However I hate how they feel in the hand, so I went with a Walther PPQ. Pretty sure the PDP has replaced that now, just be aware it'll cost a little more.

Just go for a 38 snub if you want more stopping power and a small concealable gun.

Beretta PX4 Storm or the PX4 Storm Compact are great for a first pistol, single/double action and it shoots pretty soft compared to something like a glock.

No, it's metal. You're not really stopping or deterring anyone with a single shot .22LR, plus the time it takes to deploy is super impractical.

It's essentially a novelty.

A good tool for this would be inert rounds, like A-Zoom. They're solid chunks of aluminum that have the exact dimensions of a real cartridge, and have a soft rubber primer to let you dry fire safely, and/or see if you have light primer strikes. I practice malfunction/jam clearing with them.

Get some kind of training ammo like snap caps (A-Zoom is what I use as does another poster it seems, good practice plastic rounds) if you want to practice loading and unloading, or clearing a misfire simulation.

You will get laughed at if you go for a desert eagle .50 cal, it will fuck your wrist up. There is a reason it is not used in combat by any militaries. Hollywood made it popular as it is a cool powerful gun but not at all practical nor a EDC.

My first was a p95 ruger 9mm. Was around 300ish dollars I think. I like it. Lc9 ruger 9mm if you want concealable but you'll wanna buy this thingy that attaches to the magazine to extend the grip as otherwise it doesn't accommodate your pinky unless you got tiny hands.

Cool thing about the lc9 is it had a tab that pops up if you got a round in the chamber. That way you know if one is chambered or not. Still practice safety though even if it says it's empty. I just like it for knowing one is indeed there so I know I ain't got to chamber one.

I've ejected bullets a few times not thinking one was in the chamber.
