If work happens to take much less time, I can leave early and not be penalized. Sure u don't get overtime but ur supposed to be compensated somewhat extra for that.

But I do have to stay late sometimes or work from home to finish work with no other incentive - I just try to tell myself I'm being fairly compensated for this work.

Are you waged or salaried? Do you care? Do you have a preference?

I'm waged. I'd rather avoid salaried positions as long as possible. I work my 40 hours, then I'm out the door. I don't want to be expected to put in more time with no extra pay

unless you earn like $10,000 - $20,000 more annually? That's typically the case.

When I was hired to be manager my boss wanted to keep me hourly since I was putting in so much work, but then the accountant was like "Is it necessary for Starrky to have 20 hours of overtime?"

My boss was like uhh yeah he's the manager he kinda needs that but they were like nah put him on salary and that is the story of how I started earning less for the same work.

Although I will say it was nice being able to miss some days and it not completely break my paycheck.

I'm salaried. I'm still required to make X hours a payperiod (which is just 8hrs/workday). But I work as a software engineer and I don't have a strict clock-in/clock-out time. So I can start my day whenever and leave whenever plus I work from home so no commute either.

If I do need to work more hours a couple days to finish up something, then I usually just leave early on Friday.

Salaried. Can't imagine having to actually clock in and out. Haven't had to do that since I worked at Walmart for a summer before college.

Salaried here. I'm lucky my boss keeps it to 830-5 Monday thru Friday. It also helps I get my work done during that time.

I'm salaried, but my work has what they call "Incentive Compensation" pay, which is basically overtime as long as we are working on work that is billable to a client.
It is certainly nice having at least something to show for it if I need to work long hours.

It really depends on how bad the workload is. I want to do IT work, so the $20k pay bump might be worth it if I'm mostly teleworking anyway.

But I did calculate it and at the pay rate of the unsalaried IT position, getting an extra $20k per year would be the same as working 5 hours of overtime every week (45 hours a week). But some salaried employees work 50-60 hours a week.

I'm salaried and maybe I just lucked out but I typically do not work more than 40 hours in a week. It's happened from time to time if there's a really tight deadline, but it's rare. My bosses also encourage everyone to take all their vacation time because they don't want people getting burned out.

Ive worked three salaried positions as a software dev and Ive never averaged over 40 hours a week and have in fact worked a lot less many weeks

prior to that I was salary non-exempt which was a guaranteed 40 hours of pay but with overtime if I went over. That was obviously ideal

i definitely like salaried, not having to worry about submitting hours and all that. If I started getting expected to work more than 40 hours Id start looking for a new job

Salary in IT sounds dreadful.
Depends on the company. I work for 2 simultaneously from home and each take less than 20 hrs of work a week. I probably put in around 25-30 hrs total and I get paid for basically 80.

I had to job hop IT jobs over the course of a year to get this perfect combo and I've learned that for every company in IT that is willing to overwork you, there's another that pays the same and assigns a modest amount of work and don't care what you do as long as it's done by the agreed upon date.

Now that I'm at a sensible company, I don't mind being on salary at all. It kinda sucked at my old job when I was always working 60 - 85 hours. But now that I typically work somewhere around 40 hours, it's great.

I'm salaried. I take longer lunch breaks now since no one pays attention to my time. I feel it balances out since sometimes I do have to do a little work after hours or on the weekend. I'm salary is basically double what it was when I first got hired at an hourly rate here (although my last hourly rate after all of my raises is not THAT far behind my current salary).

I'm salaried non-exempt. Which means I still get overtime for anything after 8 hours a day and after 40 hours a week. Buuuut, I'm scheduled 9 hours a day, so I'm forced to work that 5 hours of OT every week.

Waged, except I don't get any overtime unless it's approved in advance. There was stuff that I stayed over for just so I could finish it, but once I realized that I wasn't being paid for it, I stopped doing it and started leaving at 4:30pm if I can help it.

This. I've been in IT for 14 years and have always been salary. Most of my jobs have never overworked me. The couple that have tried, I didn't allowed them to do so. Do I have weeks where I'm working 10-12 hour days to get multiple projects done? Sure but that makes up 2-4 weeks out of my year. The rest of the time I'm doing 20 hours a week at most. If you're being overworked in IT then you're allowing yourself to be overworked.

I'm salaried with most of the perks of an hourly wage worker, just can't join the Union, and I can't get overtime - just comp/Credit time, which is more valuable to me than the extra pay.

lol what's with ce always being so backwards. everyone i know is always trying to get salary. i also can't imagine moving up any kind of ladder on contract instead of being salaried and actually a part of a company. it's just about the OT nonsense? they typically raise your salary higher than you'd get with OT anyway, without busting your ass unnecessarily.

Been on salary for the last 3 places I've worked, absolutely wouldn't go back to hourly. I work fixed hours though, there is no possibility of overtime or going over my hours. In addition, due to the nature of my current role there can be long stretches of time where work may not be required, meaning I literally get paid at time to sit at home and watch TV.

What? You can have time based pay without being an outsider contractor. Not sure where that's coming from.
