I'm not opposed to restrictions but any time or fee based licensure that you place gun ownership behind will disproportionately and negatively affect poor and working class people, which happens to be the demographic who are most likely to need a firearm to use for self defense.

The same with red flag laws, these won't work the way you want them to. How many times do rich assholes get away with any number of crimes because they can afford to hire a high priced lawyer who can get them a sweet plea deal? Rich people who should lose their guns to red flag laws won't while the demographics most likely to need them will.

Another good example of this disarming a group more likely to be in need of a defensive firearm would be the Trans community. Whom a chunk of the population wants to commit violence against solely because they exist. Gender Dysphoria is still classified as a mental disorder and chuds will absolutely push for them to fall under red flag laws.

Like I said, I'm not opposed to gun ownership restrictions, but it's not simply a matter of picking a line and placing gun ownership behind it because of how deeply broken and unequal our society is as it relates to race, class, and other minorities.

Okay. I can respect systemic barriers in the justice and health care system that would prevent minorities from exercising the same rights as rich white people.

Thats the story on election day when it comes to voting, too.

But... if we can't implement systems and safeguards like that, the only thing left would be to take guns out of everyone's hands? A complete and total ban on firearms, Australian or Swiss style?

If the first isn't a solution, and the second is a non-starter because the two-party system reinforces the inability to enact a ban, what options are available to solve mass shootings (let alone any other gun violence) anymore?

Doing nothing would be better than the current situation, where immediately after a shooting Remmington started working with Activision to get the guns in CoD branded. This lead to this particularly staggering quote: "With increasing urbanization and access to shooting/hunting areas in decline, a primary means for young potential shooters to come into contact with firearms and ammunition is through virtual gaming scenarios."

It's very much yet another "saying the silent part" as if it wasn't super heinous.

Not even close. The access to guns, gun culture, and piss-poor governmental oversight has no other comparison in the world. It's also not mental health, which is a red herring...it CAN be, but even in mass shootings, is often not the case.

Everything that is not a mass shooting is domestic violence, gang shootings, etc. (excluding suicides). Virtually all these people would pass a mental health background check easily.

It's the guns and the culture around them here. it's always the guns. The horrifically stupid notion that they are needed for "self-defense" (most countries require a reason to buy a gun, and self-defense is not a permissable reason).

Absolutely.

Guns play an absolutely massive role in the manner in which many Americans resolve conflicts with each other. We've created a culture in which a large number of people have become so desensitized to violence and don't see the taking of human life as something serious. Guns certainly play a role in that - the more we care about gun rights, the less we care about human lives, and the more violence happens. There are other elements of our culture that have made it apparent that we don't really care that much about human life (the cost of healthcare, for example), but guns can be fixed. It's simple. Actually require thorough background checks complete with suitability interviews, wellness checks, and references.

We could start by trying things we haven't yet, that other countries do, and it works well.

Or just do nothing, wait for the next one, be 'sad', and then move on, wait for the next before being 'sad' again, and so on and so on.

A majority of Americans, great majority, like 90% want common sense gun laws. It's that easy. Do it. The 10% who don't want it, can suck it up.

We can improve upon and refine it it but ultimately can never escape the foundations and values this country was built upon for better or for worse.

Learning is one thing but actually applying it is another and thats not happening. I said there would be major push back but that was a massive understatement.

Theres very little public will to ban guns irl. So that only leaves force. And while you may believe the people will just let it slide like cigarettes or seatbelts I dont believe that would be the case, along with our government Im almost positive.

I don't think that's likely. mass shooters usually only kill themselves at the scene or if they're cornered. he's gotten away so far.

Most don't escape to begin with. I say he is dead. It isn't uncommon for fugitives to off themselves when they awake the hive. It isn't like the dude is some Geronimo, mentally tough and trained in wilderness survival. A day of hunger, rain, cold and paranoia and the dude probably ended up throwing in the towel.
