Surprised the guidelines allow people to keep their guns after saying they want to commit a mass shooting. Would have thought that would put someone on a watchlist.

The bill Biden passed last year gave incentives to states for enacting red flag laws, which would have been exactly what this was made to prevent.

Did Maine take advantage of any of those incentives or implement any red flag laws in the wake of that bill's passage? (My Google results on Maine and guns are, right now, understandably tainted.)

Two reasons.

1.) The American justice system doesn't do pre-crime arrests.

2.) No one has really been successful in implementing any kind of control of safety measures that would prevent a crime from happening.

I don't think the places he picked as targets were random anymore. This seems pretty planned out considering how he is still loose.

The reaction to a load of kindergarteners getting gunned down was for the gun cultists to say it was a false flag.

We're generations away from fixing gun violence at a minimum.

It's purpleish, leaning more blue. The northern parts of the state are ruby red, the rest of the state--particularly around Portland--is decently blue.

Ideally, any felony charges means that you don't have access to firearms. At least one might hope. I don't know if that actually bars you from owning firearms. Ideally, him having mental health crisis and ending up in a crisis center for it would have barred him as well.

But I think even dems in Maine support gun rights.

So decided to look into Maines gun laws. If he had been forced into a mental health program he should been disarmed, but only if it was court ordered. So thats a loophole there that might need to be looked at.

Theyll use the justification that law enforcement has failed to catch him as evidence that they need their guns.

My wife and I met in Maine during pharmacy school so the state is pretty near and dear to us. We traveled up there a few years ago to celebrate our first wedding anniversary.

Definitely going to keep an eye on this one and our hearts go out to the victims of this senseless tragedy.

I appreciate your honesty in disclosing that but not all illnesses present with the same symptoms. With something like schizophrenia, you can present with what's callled "positive" and/or "negative" symptoms.

Positive symptoms are some of the more classic symptoms such as auditory/visual/olfactory hallucinations. Negative symptoms would describe things like anhedonia where you no longer take pleasure in the things you once enjoyed doing.

I don't know if this killer is a schizophrenic but he may have had some, all, or none of these symptoms.

From what I remember, I think it's described as "positive" because those symptoms are classic examples that describe schizophrenia - or at the very least, they are positively associated with it. The negative symptoms come from the lack of emotions depending on where you are in the scale.

Yeah, mental health cuts began under Reagan and have only had very small upticks over the years.

For a politician, the evidence of being truly committed to what they're saying is in whatever budget they're responsible for. Tl;dr: they've gotta put the money where their mouth is to be taken seriously.

I have had positive symptoms before, where Ive experienced auditory hallucinations that tell me to hurt people. However, I tell myself that those arent my real thoughts and I would never do such a thing because Im not a bad person.

This killer is an asshole who is using voices as an excuse to kill people out of a perverted sense of fun.

This is fucked up. On one hand I'm a veteran and truly support his ability to seek mental health. He did that from what ive read. I think he should even be able to be honest and say he wanted to shoot up a place, like he apparently did. I also think when things like that are said he should be further evaluated and guns removed from his access while that is happening.

He did right by seeking help but the system didn't or couldn't take him seriously. You can't just let the ticking time bomb keep ticking without doing something about it. Now this in no way let's him off the hook, he killed and hurt so many. But God damn our system is fucked.

I have a friend who's from there originally. His sister still lives there.

It's because Republicans actively want mass shootings. Everytime one of these occurs, they are flooded with donations through gun worshipping organizations. Nothing stokes the base more than the baseless fear that Dems are coming for their armories.

This reminds me of charles whitman - he blatantly told the therapist "I just wanna climb a clock tower and start shooting people. Don't write off red flags.

Just checked and Maine does not have "red flag laws" that would have taken guns from the shooter (given his condition) and also prevented him from purchasing firearms. They have something called a "yellow flag law".

They may want to reconsider that situation.

I suppose the issue with that is that it would deincentivize people from seeking mental health. If patients thought they were going to get thier rights away or treated as a terror suspect for talking to mental health professionals they won't. The issue is that it is hard to know the efficacy of mental health treatment. It isn't like you can run a proper controlled experiment for any of this stuff. There may have been a ton of killers that were stopped because they got psychological counseling, who knows, you only get to see the failures.
