I didn't even consider another Bioware game because I didn't catch the hint and don't associate them with a cratering reputation. Feels obvious in retrospect though. I went with Overwatch which felt wrong but Skyrim was my runner-up and that felt worse.

I only got 7 or 8 right so its not a big deal. I just saw my MGS4 guess missing from the Dragon Age spot and figured something was up. Im actually really surprised that spot wasnt MGS4.
MGS4 was #106, in the first post. I really love some parts of it, but the other parts really drag it down, and it has almost no gameplay after Act 2.

80. A Plague Tale: Innocence / A Plague Tale: Requiem
It's hard to talk about these games without spoilers, but I'll do my best. The Plague Tale duology is rough. It puts its two likable main characters through the grinder. Brief spots of hope are upended by extended periods of hardship. I think the first game's tagline of 'Innocence' is the one that describes this series the best, as loss of innocence defines everything about Plague Tale's experience. It certainly succeeds at its goal of making you feel certain emotions. I don't think I could ever go back to these games, but I'm glad I played them once.

Also, seeing a gigantic swarm of rats never gets old. They make for incredible visual effects. Increased graphical fidelity is a nice bonus of modern consoles, but Plague Tale is one of the few games I've played that seems to take advantage of the fact that we can now have a ton of objects on-screen at once.

79. Final Fantasy Tactics
I have mixed feelings about FFT, although most are positive. Its story is resonant and memorable but loses its focus near the end. Its two main characters Ramza and Delita are fantastic, but the rest of the playable cast suffers due to dialogue restrictions. Probably would have been worth ditching permadeath so people could actually talk after they join. The strategy gameplay is fun, but gets slow after a while, and the job system incentivizes an insane amount of grinding. The soundtrack...actually the soundtrack is one of my favorite in the series, no complaints there.

FFT feels like it could become an all-timer for me with some gameplay tweaks and plot modifications. As it stands, it's just 'really good'.

78. What Remains of Edith Finch
I'm not saying anything else about this one. Doing its writeup justice would mean ruining the experience for people who haven't played it. To summarize: phenomenal execution of a strong core concept. Also doesn't outstay its welcome.

77. Dragon Age: Inquisition
Inquisition fans rise up!...No?...Just me? Damnit.

Watching this game go from winning a soft GotY cycle to basically written off has been a bit sad to me. I really enjoyed Inquisition. Largely because I love the Dragon Age world, and getting to revisit it was a joy. Even setting aside personal bias, though, I think the game is just...good? The dialogue is strong, the characters are interesting, the combat is fun (although a bit repetitive), and the environments are well-realized. I highly enjoyed my playthrough from start to finish. It suffers from a lame main villain, and it's definitely too long and bloated, but overall I pretty much think Inquisition deserved the reception it got. Would have loved to play Dragon Age 4 back when Bioware wasn't in the shitter.

76. Mass Effect 2
Inquisition probably means more to me than ME2, but I couldn't justify putting it above this. Mass Effect 2 is just so damn polished. I didn't like ME1, I didn't like ME3, and I still had a great time with ME2. The pacing is structured perfectly, with a clear goal set at the start, an extended rising action that utilizes its extremely likable cast of characters, and concluding with one final mission that ties everything together. There's a reason this game blew up the series and made the hype for ME3 out of control. Mass Effect 2's only actual flaw I can think of is that you need to play ME1 to get the optimal amount of enjoyment.

75. Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine
A fun multiplayer game where you and your friends assume the role of a group of thieves to clear levels. I was lucky enough to play it with two different groups back in the day, and those fond memories have stuck with me since then. I can't even comment much on the game itself because I just picked the mole and turned the level design into swiss cheese. For all I know, Monaco is bad if you examine it with a critical eye. Wouldn't care, I had a blast with friends.

74. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
The game that launched a thousand youtube retrospectives. Majora's Mask is one of those experiences that sticks with you for years afterwards. I actually wasn't very high on it initially, mostly due to the lackluster dungeons, which to be fair are still an issue. But the atmosphere, the tension, the vibes are all immaculate. It's like an arthouse game with Nintendo budget and polish. There's never been another experience quite like it. If I had to pick a pre-BotW Zelda game to replay, I'd choose this one in a heartbeat.

73. Raging Loop
You know that thing a lot of Japanese stories do? That thing where they start off with a strong concept, build on it, establish a relatively grounded narrative, use that grounding to develop their characters...then go off the fucking deep end for the finale?

Yeah, Raging Loop did that. The last 1/4 of the game isn't terrible, but it is questionable. I'm still coming to terms with how I feel about the ending. Aside from that...it's a murder mystery Mafia-based Visual Novel setting with a fantastic protagonist. I was pretty much guaranteed to like it.

72. Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
On the whole, this game is probably worse than FFT. I really like LUCT's strategy gameplay, and I think Reborn's quality-of-life improvements put it above FFT. but the writing is less tight, the characters aren't as memorable as Ramze/Delita, and the soundtrack is somewhat worse.

Where it really shines is the branching plot. Let Us Cling Together has an early-story decision that floored me when I first encountered it. Almost everything changes after that point; they essentially included two games worth of content in one title. Whereas FFT's plot was more about how upper-castes oppress lower-castes which don't get me wrong, is exactly my kind of plot LUCT is more about the decisions people make during times of war, and the justifications they then make to help themselves to sleep at night. LUCT's storyline came across as more nuanced and interesting to me, and it sticks the landing much better than FFT does.

71. Anatomy
Three hours of distilled horror perfection. A masterclass in building atmosphere. Saying anything more would be harming the experience.

Has anyone ever even lost a character to permadeath in FFT? Definitely a mechanic that should have either been scrapped or revamped to make it actually relevant.

I was enjoying the first few levels of Monaco with some friends but we eventually reached a point where I was just carrying every level and it stopped being fun pretty fast after that. Would have been great with the right group though, I think.

yeah this was me that didn't have fun with it. my friends and i tried it for maybe about 3 hours (and perhaps it takes longer than that to get good) but it just didn't stick for us in the way that other multiplayer co-op party(ish) type games did. not sure i really remember more than that to explain actual detailed criticisms of the game since it's been probably 6 or 7 years since we played it

I had fun with Monaco. It's certainly a flawed game where we had to learn every intricate part of the game to clear the game. But it was a ton of fun and incredibly memorable to all of us. The Mole is a hilarious class and the player that played The Mole would just go off and do his own thing, just making messages and art in the walls.

Round 4 Results

--

15 people submitted guesses.
The most common scores were 7 / 10 and 8 / 10.
The average score was 7.33 / 10.

Pretty even distribution of scores overall, although they trended high this time.

--

Hint:
61. A Valve game. Was not included in The Orange Box.

Answers:
Portal 2 6
Half-Life 5
Left 4 Dead 2
Half-Life Alyx 1
Left 4 Dead 2 1

There were some decent choices for this one, so a bit of mind reading was required to get it right. I actually expected more guesses for Portal 2, but maybe Half-Life 2 being #117 on the list helped clue people in to Half-Life 1.

--

Hint:
62. The most influential Dragon Quest game.

Answers:
Dragon Quest III 9
Dragon Quest I 4
Dragon Quest V 2

Dragon Quest I was technically a valid choice, but really, it's III. That game meant a lot to Japan and the genre as a whole.

--

Hint:
63. Dragon Quest but it reminded me of Pokemon when I was 10 years old, so I bought it.

Answers:
Dragon Quest Monsters 14
Dragon Quest V 1

DQV also has monster collecting, but only Monsters was available for purchase when I was a young whippersnapper.

--

Hint:
64. A phoenix rises from the ashes after a disappointing 4th entry.

Answers:
Phoenix Wright - Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies 11
Miles Edgeworth: Ace Attorney Investigations 2
Devil May Cry 5 1
Heroes of Might and Magic V 1

I tried putting in clues here. 'Phoenix' for Phoenix Wright, and 'Rise Form the Ashes' to reference a case name from the series. Some people ended up with a false positive of AAI using those clues, but their mistake there was assuming I would put AAI on a list of good games.

--

Hint:
65. A game well-known for never being officially localized, regardless of fan's repeated pleas.

Answers:
Mother 3 14
Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War 1

Only one game gets spammed in random Nintendo Directs chats due to being a meme. Reggie himself recognized it!

Hopefully, Fire Emblem 4 won't even be a valid answer within the next few years.

--

Hint:
66. Dying in the underworld. A lot.

Answers:
Hades 13
Binding of Isaac 1
Hollow Knight 1

Underworld=Hades was pretty on the nose.

--

Hint:
67. Technological limitations led to fog obscuring distant objects, which became a series staple.

Answers:
Silent Hill 13
Silent Hill 2 1

I probably made some of these hints too easy.

--

Hint:
68. Before it got re-released digitally, this JRPG may have been the most expensive PS1 game due to a low print run and strong word-of-mouth.

Answers:
Suikoden II 9
Vagrant Story 2
Valkyrie Profile 2
Xenogears 2

Full disclosure, I didn't exactly do in-depth research for this prompt. The others games could have been more expensive. With that said, I remember Suikoden II going for a jillion dollars back in the day, and apparently most of you did as well.

--

Hint:
69. Heartbeat Heartbeat Book Organization

Answers:
Doki Doki Literature Club 12
Persona 4 2
Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors 1

A direct play on the title. If you knew, you knew.

--

Hint:
70. A Visual Novel with a bunch of plot twists and no real ending.

Answers:
Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward 11
Umineko no Naku Koro ni 1
Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair 1
Steins;Gate 1
Tsukihime 1

Responses were more accurate than I expected. Kinda funny how many people agreed with my assessment of VLR's plot! 'Middle child' was somewhat ambiguous, but I wanted to make a clue about it being the 2nd game in a trilogy without directly stating that.

--

Mac Arrowny
Hbthebattle
MZero
All with a score of 10 / 10! The next-highest score was an 8 / 10, which a lot of people got.

@MacArrowny

In the world of youtube and Let's Play, sometimes you don't need to play a game to be a fan of it. These are five of my favorite games that I've never actually sat down and played myself. I'm making the hints harder than usual so we don't get a bunch of perfects this time.

Hints:
1. Has a lot of different dialogue based on how drunk you make people get.

2. I. Hear. A. Sound.

3. Candidate for the most horrifying ending in gaming. The title of the game is four letters long.

4. A series finale that pissed off a lot of people early in the game, then again during the ending.

5. The title is two primal instincts of humanity. They're core gameplay elements, too.

If no one participates, I'll choose the winner at random. Also, for people not participating in the lightning round you're free to theorize to yourself, but don't post any answers in the topic.

70. Virtues Last Reward
VLR is in a weird spot. A good chunk of it is dedicated to setting up plot points that don't really pay off in the next game. It also...kinda doesn't have an ending? All the secrets are revealed, and then it goes "Isn't that wild? Tune in for the sequel!" A sequel that almost didn't happen, by the way. The climax doesn't feel like a climax, which is what prevents VLR from being one of the all-time great VNs.

But man, that first playthrough is still a trip. VLR executes crazy plot twists with gusto. There's multiple jaw-dropping moments that I remember to this day. Even if the plot peters out near the end, it's worth playing just for the emotional reactions you'll get along the way. Plus...considering I didn't like how 999 or Zero Time Dilemma ended, make VLR's lack of a big crazy ending is a blessing in disguise.

Aside from that, the AB Game Ally/Betray setup is by far my favorite scenario of the three Zero Escape games, effortlessly creating tension. I could say more but we're getting into spoiler territory.

69. Doki Doki Literature Club
I appreciate DDLC for introducing a lot of people to Visual Novels. The vast majority of them probably didn't end up playing anything besides DDLC, but hey.

Can't talk about this one in detail without ruining it. To be brief: it's a short-but-sweet experience that executes its concept very well. Not perfect, but definitely memorable. Bonus points for being one of the few games I've played with family as my second playthrough, where I got to watch reactions.

68. Suikoden II
I struggle to think of a better-paced JRPG. Maybe Chrono Trigger? Either way, Suikoden II is certainly high on that list. It starts strong and keeps consistent momentum throughout its entire runtime. Being half as long as other big games in the genre will do that. I actually lost my save data 2/3 of the way through my first playthrough, and didn't even mind immediately starting a new file, because no part of it felt like a chore. That is not what my response would have been with most games.

Suikoden II's plot is mostly a case of being well-executed rather than unique, but where it stands out is Luca Blight, one of the best villains in all of gaming. Every single scene with him is extremely memorable, and it culminates in a phenomenal boss fight. Jowy also makes for a strong character and plot-driver, being one of the better examples of his archetype I've seen. Man, writing all this out is making me think I should've put the game higher on my list.

67. Silent Hill
It's certainly aged, and the numerous sequels and imitators have somewhat diluted what originally made it so special. With that said, Silent Hill 1 is still one of the best horror games ever made. The plot and characters are whatever, but goes all-in on atmosphere, tension, environments, setting, mood, and music. In every one of those aspects, it completely succeeds.

Horror is the most subjective genres in fiction. It's also difficult write out what makes atmosphere horror work - that sort of thing is better-suited to a two hour youtube analysis with gameplay clips and itemized references, and I'm not about that life. I wouldn't be surprised if someone didn't like SH1. I'll just say that for me, it remains a pillar of the genre. I actually played it after Silent Hill 2, and was still impressed. It's something I would recommend to anyone who cares about horror (and can look past PS1 graphics and controls).

66. Hades
Hades would already be an enjoyable experience with just the gameplay. It's a super well-polished roguelike experience, with fast, fun combat, lots of build variety, and few points of frustration. This is technically the most important aspect of why the game is great. Roguelikes, perhaps more than any other genre, suffer from questionable design choices, which Hades largely avoids.

What really makes it stand out, though, is the frankly absurd amount of dialogue in the game. Its characters have something new to say every time you die. Going a step further, they'll often specifically react to tiny things you did, and you can progress their arcs by giving them items gained from doing gameplay. It's honestly genius how much better this makes the roguelike experience as a whole. No death feels bad, because regardless of lost progress, you still get to go see what the underworld's misfits are up to.

65. Mother 3
A game of highs and...not lows, but mediums. There's no part of Mother 3 that's outright bad, but some parts are clearly less interesting than others. It lacks the ever-present weirdness of Earthbound, where random details would keep you entertained even when nothing was really happening. That feels like an unfair comparison, as Mother 3's plot wouldn't have fit with constant quirkiness, but I can't ignore the fact that some sections were just kinda okay.

Those highs, though? They'll stick with you. Mother 3 goes straight for the heart.

64. Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies
Deserves a spot on this list just from rescuing Phoenix from the garbage bin. I couldn't stand what AA4 did to his character. Should he have been retired after AA3? Does his presence make it difficult for Apollo and Athena to get the limelight they need? Yes, and I consider all those as acceptable tradeoffs. It's not easy to salvage a plot-based series after the well has been thoroughly poisoned. DD essentially performed a miracle, and bringing back the poster boy was a necessary part of that.

When DD came out I ranked it as my 2nd-favorite in the series in large part due to Phoenix Is Back hype but I've cooled on it since then. It doesn't reach the peaks of AA1 or AA3. Still, it's one of the most consistently enjoyable Ace Attorney games, and it definitely has its moments.

63. Dragon Warrior Monsters
Caught me in my monster-collecting phase. Outside of Pokemon itself, this is the only other one I ended up enjoying. Dragon Warrior Monsters (titled that way due to Game Boy Color nostalgia) has three notable strengths. First, it's Dragon Quest. The monsters have fantastic designs, and in this type of game, that's very important. Second, the breeding system is jank but fun. It has an element of commitment to it, where you permanently lose the two monsters you put together. There's no compendium like Persona. In exchange, you get to create unique combinations with bizarre stats and abilities that don't fit whatsoever.

Third and a bigger deal to me than most players are the randomly-generated dungeons. Each dungeon is split up into floors, and each floor has the potential to be something completely different then the last There's a good number of variations, and it does a lot to keep things fresh throughout the game's lengthy runtime.

62. Dragon Warrior III
I recently replayed this a few years ago. Square announced the HD remake a week later. Damnit.

Dragon Quest III probably wouldn't feel special to modern-day gamers the reason being that it influenced every JRPG under the sun. This game basically created the template for the genre, and even after Final Fantasy evolved it, the roots are still there. It's the Seinfeld of games, feeling derivative due to being such a foundational piece of media.

And much like Seinfeld, it's still great anyway. Dragon Quest III has charm out the wazoo, great area design, simple-but-fun combat, and strong character customization. It also has the single-best introduction in any game I've played, where you answers a series of personal questions, get thrown into one of many unique mini-scenarios, then are judged based on the actions you take. Other games may have copied everything else about DQ3, but not this, for some reason.

Actually, I might have gotten a similar experience playing Dragon Warrior III for the Game Boy Color that people in Japan got playing DQ3 on release. Being an RPG lover with only Nintendo systems for the first 6-7 years of my life was...tough. This and Dragon Warrior Monsters were my oasis in the desert.

61. Half-Life
Either the original or the Black Mesa remake. Both are equal in my eyes.

Very few people would rank Half-Life 1 above 2, but I like to live dangerously. HL1 does nearly everything right. It set a standard that should be met by games released decades later, yet rarely is. The secret sauce for why this game is evergreen lies in the phenomenal level design. Exploring Black Mesa is exciting from start to finish. It has a very strong closed-in atmosphere, as well as frequent, unique setpieces and encounters. The moment-to-moment gameplay is hard to beat.

I'd still consider DD my second favorite AA game because the average case quality is so high. Its top end may not be as high as SoJ, but it's way more consistent.

5-2, 5-3, 5-5, and 5-6 are all great. I feel like 5-4 is underappreciated because of its weird ending. 5-1 is the weak link, but it's also the intro case, so it's forgivable.

I'm a fan of 5-1 and 5-4 as well! DD has no weak link cases for me.

Also finding out Mother 3 isn't dialing the weird up to 11 all the time might be a selling point to me because Earthbound was just too weird for me (and that battle system is super dated and borderline unplayable for someone whose first RPG was Mario RPG).

Mother 3 has timed hits (kinda) like the Mario RPGs, so you'd probably like that aspect.

I do love timed hits in any format

It's part of the reason Squall is the greatest character ever because his weapon implements timed hits...!

When I first started playing VNs, non-Japanese ones had a very bad reputation, and I generally tried to avoid them. At this point, however, I have played three original English VNs, I believe: DDLC, Katawa Shoujo, and Slay the Princess. All three of these are great games with original concepts. Either I've picked the cream of the crop, or English VNs have gotten a bit better over time. Either way, I'm quite happy with them.

I still like Portal 1/2, but they didn't inspire that enduring love that other games have for me. They're more like fun-in-the-moment experiences.

Slay the Princess is worth it then? The short run time + not cheap price tag made me a bit hesitant.
