idk about normal, but unlawful combatants can do things in war that they have no clearance for, while still technically being civilians.

In video games? I guess depending on the game and depends on the context of said game. Like, for example, Rome 2. Despite the old orthodoxy regarding supposed rules in war, at least for the Greeks, the once revisionist views showcased there really wasn't much restrain when it came to warfare. Back in the 90s the scholar Josh Ober made a list detailing these supposed rules of war which were dismantled by Peter Krentz. Hans van Wees defeat and destruction is an excellent paper detailing the use of violence among the Greeks, Roel Roelkonijnk in his book about Greek tactics and the section he wrote on cavalry in Brill's Companion to Greek Land Warfare Beyond the Phalanx also describes the aim for destruction in pitched battle. The destruction of communities was justified, and the population of cities were at the mercy of the victors, a common practice was to kill every captured adult male and sell the women and children into slavery, and in games like Rome 2 this is likely the fate of captured cities if you chose to exterminate them. Thankfully most people got away from this fate and you hear of once destroyed communities popping back up. The same with prisoners, their fate rested on the hands of the victor. So in context of the time period, these aren't war crimes. That's not the say that ancient warfare lacked what we might call war crimes, there's few things the Ancient Greeks abhorred even in war.

First would the killing of messengers, this was considered an offence to the gods. The movie 300 paints the killing of the Persian messenger as an act of Spartan defiance towards the Persians but in reality, the Spartans quickly realized their mistake and sent someone to die at the hands of the Persians. The Persians refused to kill the man the Spartans sent and instead treated him well and sent him back, meaning Sparta earned the wrath of the gods for killing a messenger. The destruction of Athens and the death of Leonidas was in part blamed on the actions of both Athens and Sparta on the Persian messengers.

Second would be the denying of a proper burial for the dead. This was extremely important, one of the most extreme threats the Achaeans delivered to the Trojan in the Iliad was the slaughter of every male in the city, even babies still inside their mother's bellies, and the denying of a burial. In the context of Greek battle once one side called for a truce to pick up the dead it was an admittance of defeat, even with all the deception and trickery the Greeks employed this was to be respected. An example of the fate of those that fail to recover the dead is found in the aftermath of the battle of Arginusae where the Athenian generals were executed for failing to do so.

With that in mind, no, I don't think I've committed war crimes in Rome 2 in the context of the setting. Now Civilization games are a different story.
