It's not just about price.

The most obvious and commonly cited benefit of purchasing private label is price, but it seems shoppers also believe these products are better.

This I don't believe though

They're not the same. Outside of milk, I can't think of a single store brand product that is as good as the name brand product. Whether that quality difference matters you or not is the only real question.

TBH, a lot of that is probably in your head. Like I said, they are often made in the same factories and have the exact same ingredients.

That's very subjective. Also, there is levels of store brand, especially for kroger.
Their private selection brand is really good stuff and their simple truth is very...basic.

to the point though, try their gummy bears or worms. They make a very good gummy imo.
Cereal is something that's comparative as well, sometimes better in store brand.

That's always the tagline, "they're made in the same factory", but taste, textures, and age are always noted. Go eat bowl of fruit loops from the box and then a store brand ver., you'll notice. Can of vegetables, Del monte vs. the store brand, you'll notice. Barilla spaghetti noodles vs. GV brand, if you cook you'll know the difference. Of course not everything has a major difference, and that difference might not be worth the price.

I grew up on store brands and anyone who did will know the difference.

Not all store brands are the same obviously but in my experience there are quite a few instances where store brands I've come across are not only cheaper but better than name brands. Store brand waffles versus Eggos is an obvious one that is true here in at least two stores.

I grew up on store brands too, and still buy them often, and IMO 90% of the shit tastes exactly the same, so the tagline, and apparently the research it comes from, is correct.

i can promise you that private label brands are made in the same manufacturing plants and many times the same formation has name brand products

magic eraser vs store brand is a great example its melamine foam made in the same german plant just labeled differently

the same goes with many products not all but many

There are some store brands I prefer, but I assume it is because I have not tried the particular name brand they were based on.
Also, I think there's no reason why private label quality should be consistent, and that's why people have different experiences. Isn't one of the advantages (for the store) that the manufacturer can be changed without altering any labels? Or have regional differences depending on local overstock?

Yeah. When they started it was pretty obvious that a lot of their stuff was name-brand stuff that they had just put a Trader Joe's label on. Then they started making their own stuff and got even better.

some store brands are the same as name brands, others are vastly different

just wait for store-brand meat and produce and dairy. where the grocery conglomerates own the farms and deliberately lower cost+quality. In canada, all the bakeries are already owned by the grocery giants.

Grocery is basically an oligopoly in Canada.
2 companies: 48% market share
3 companies: 58%
5 companies: 76%

regional competition is obviously limited to segments of the national "other". In most areas, the effective market share is higher because "other" is smaller. This is offset by small communities that are serviced wholly by an independent, for example.
