I wonder if there was any anti-Vivi voting there, given that there was a lot of talk about him being a favorite, and with the close match, seeing an opportunity to get him out. On the other hand, Tifa has been particularly popular lately, so she might be stronger than we thought.

This contest seems to be more heavily skewed towards games with bigger playrates, VII and to a lesser extent X are overperforming. But then with Vivi and Aeris both going out early maybe there's anti-votes in play idk. Either way, Vivi and Celes going out there is bad!

Day 27 Results:

(3) Squall Leonhart (FFVIII) --VS-- (30) Laguna Loire (FFVIII) - 22-12
Laguna was originally planned to appear in Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep, and a scenario was planned where he would be the one in charge of the Mirage Arena. However, due to his inclusion in Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, he was left out.

(19) Zack Fair (FFVII) --VS-- (14) Oerba Dia Vanille (FFXIII) - 15-21
Our 10th champion ousted, Zack was chosen as the protagonist in Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- primarily because of his pre-determined fate. Kitase later said that his story had "been cooking for 10 years" as conceptual artwork and backstory already existed for him in Final Fantasy VII, despite him only being a minor character.

(11) Kefka Palazzo (FFVI) --VS-- (22) Adelbert Steiner (FFIX) - 26-11
In the French version of the game, Steiner is named Edward Adelbert Steiner, Edward being a more common first name that French people would know better than Adelbert. Whatever his name is, he is our 11th champion to fall, though it should be noted the last two matches were both champ vs champ.

(27) Yuffie Kisaragi (FFVII) --VS-- (6) Zidane Tribal (FFIX) - 20-18
In this back-and-forth battle, Yuffie was able to step on Zidanes tail at the last minute and take the victory. And yes, Zidane does have a tail in case youve forgotten. The only time Zidane uses it in game is when he evades Steiner on the cargo ship, demonstrating the ability to hang from it. He is our 12th champion to fall.

Hm that is interesting! Barret v Tidus, Tifa v Yuna, Cloud v Rikku. Honestly I think all three matches are in play, but I'd favour VII in the first two (thanks to Tidus's tight wins over Terra and Beatrix, and Tifa's performance against Vivi).

Also it looks like (current day spoilers) IX will have no reps in the top 16! Who saw that coming?

Day 28 Results:

(7) Kuja (FFIX) --VS-- (26) Locke Cole (FFVI) - 19-26
Locke went on a 16-4 comeback run to knockout Kuja, the last remaining FFIX character, from the tournament. Kuja is our 13th champ to fall.

Selphie Tilmitt (FFVIII) --VS-- (10) Auron (FFX) - 12-32
Rikku, from FFX, uses the phrase "Booyaka" when dealing a finishing blow to an enemy, as a tribute to Selphie. Selphie was also the second character created for FFVIII, after Squall of course.

(15) Edgar Roni Figaro (FFVI) --VS-- (18) Ffamran "Balthier" mied Bunansa (FFXII) - 24-20
In the Japanese version, Balthier is voiced by Hiroaki Hirata. Coincidentally, given Balthier's status as a sky pirate, Hirata also provides the voice of the pirate Jack Sparrow in Kingdom Hearts II, and has also done Japanese dubbing of various other Johnny Depp roles. He is also the Japanese voice actor for Sanji, pirate chef of the Straw Hat crew in One Piece. Balthier is our 14th and final champion to fall in Round 3.

Cid Pollendina (FFIV) --VS-- (2) Cecil Harvey (FFIV) - 15-28
Cid P is the first playable Cid in the main series. He is also the final Cid to be eliminated from the tournament.

Some fun facts from Round 3:

We lost 9 champions in Round 3, bringing the total to 14. But there are still 10 champions alive going to the Sweet Sixteen, keeping them over 50% of the remaining field.

FFIX lost the most characters this round out of any single game with a total of 4 characters defeated, completely eliminating the game in the process. FFV, FFXII, and FFXV were also eliminated this round.

FFVII and FFX each went 4-1 in Round 3, meaning they have the most characters remaining from a single game, with 4 apiece. Together, they make up half of the remaining field.

Our biggest remaining upset in the tourney is Barret (56) with Yuna close behind (53). The only other unseeded character (outside the top 32) that made it to the next round is Rikku (36).

Day 29 Results:

(1) Claire Lightning Farron (FFXIII) --VS-- (17) Ramza Beoulve (FFT) - 23-17
Ramza, who had been the last non-mainline game character standing since the beginning of Round 3, finally falls, and is our 15th champion to do so.

Barret Wallace (FFVII) --VS-- (8) Tidus (FFX) - 21-20
Similar to his match against Rydia (even ending in the same exact score), Barret was down early, but finished strong, this time going on a 10-4 run to surpass Tidus and move on to the quarterfinals. Our 16th champion to fall, Tidus was originally going to be an undead in early plot drafts, but this was changed due to the release of the film The Sixth Sense, which had a similar plot twist. Since Auron is not the main character, the plot point was transferred to him.

ok, now were there any movies that came out in like, the 1994-97 timeframe where the main character was actually dead the whole time and the movie took place in their mind as they were dying and/or after they died? We can prove a certain theory for all time with that...

Day 30 Results:

(28) Tifa Lockhart (FFVII) --VS-- Yuna (FFX) - 19-21
The only matchup in the Sweet Sixteen not to feature a champion in it went down to the wire, but Yuna prevailed in the end. Tifa has a history of doing well in contests though, and not just on this site. She was voted as the fifth-best female character in video games among GameSpot readers in 2000, ranked as the 19th-best video game character of all time by Famitsu readers in 2010, and the ninth-best Final Fantasy character in the All Final Fantasy Big Vote in 2020 (though it should be noted that Yuna came in 2nd in that Big Vote).

(13) Cloud Strife (FFVII) --VS-- Rikku (FFX) - 22-19
Sticking with the subject of character accolades in random internet contests, Rikku won the award for "Hottest Character" in G4's 2004 G-Phoria awards show. In the same year, Rikku won the "Viewers' Choice: Baddest Good Girl" on G4's Video Game Vixens. Oh, and remember that All Final Fantasy Big Vote I mentioned earlier? Cloud came in first place in that one.

Day 31 Results:

(3) Squall Leonhart (FFVIII) --VS-- (14) Oerba Dia Vanille (FFXIII) - 19-20
The top dog in newstats misses out on the quarterfinals, as he falls to our most recent champion, becoming the 17th champion in total to be eliminated.

Squall's weapon, the gunblade, is one of the iconic weapons of the Final Fantasy series. The gunblade was designed by Nomura who was into silver accessories at the time and wanted Squall to have a silver weapon. Nomura wanted some new way for the player to control the weapon in battle, and with both ideas combined, came up with the gunblade. Nomura says it has a rather odd appearance in retrospect.

(11) Kefka Palazzo (FFVI) --VS-- (27) Yuffie Kisaragi (FFVII) - 26-15
Both Yuffie and Vincent were going to be cut from the game due to lack of time, though Tetsuya Nomura and Yoshinori Kitase vetoed it, and they became optional characters as a result.Yuffie becomes a full-fledged party member in the FFVII Remake.
