It's really dumb that Square would look at the people going "I'm not going to pronounce it that way because I've always been saying 'Kate Sith' since I was an ignorant 8 year old who knew nothing" and be like "We'll change it for you guys :)" .

Guess how Siobhan, an Irish name is pronounced? It's "Shiv-on". Guess how Niamh is pronounced? It's "NEE-iv".

Well, you weren't always pronouncing it the right way. But you were pronouncing it the way the dub ended up changing it to for whatever reason.

I guess they think Americans are too stupid to figure out Gaelic.

I'm not sure they know what they're doing after the way they pronounce Vrtra in FFXIV.

Square Enix Japan pronounced it right. Square Enix in El Segundo and their localization team are either unaware of Celtic folklore or they don't care. Or even better they're 30 year olds who played the game on PS1 and have always been pronouncing it that way.

That's how the dub is pronouncing it. The original Japanese is closer to the proper Gaelic pronunciation: "ket shee."

Same as why the Fate/ dubs have never once pronounced Cu Chulainn properly. They just call him "cooch uh lane" or some variation and call it a day.

They're entitled to call him whatever they want. It's their character.

It's like how people in Arkansas leave off the second s and people in in Kansas pronounce it phonetically. Proper nouns should be pronounced however the owner of the proper noun wants it to be pronounced.

Cerberus is Latin/Roman. Kerberos is Greek.

Anyone else find it funny that square would make sure people are pronouncing Aerith right but not Cait Sith?

Maybe the Scottish should learn how to spell in English.

When it's romanized in Japan it's probably with the correct syllabic spelling though. When a Japanese person looks at the spelling it probably looks like Ket She to them and not Cait Sith.

It's hard to fault people for mispronouncing a word that is literally almost never said in real life conversations and not spelled phonetically correct. I don't think that makes "Americans" dumb.

theres nothing wrong with somebody mispronouncing it, especially because like you said the spelling is not how an English speaker would say it. its insisting that the mistake is correct and refusing to change after being informed that is the problem here

It's literally not a mistake tho if Square is going the phonetic route. They can call their character whatever they want.

No one's blaming people for mispronouncing something. Cait Sith does look like "kate sith" for those who don't know better.

Who people are shaking their heads at are the people who are willfully remaining ignorant when told the correct pronunciation, and act like other languages don't exist and such. (And acting like offical dubs can't make mistakes.)

You do know the Japanese side of SE has to approve changes like this right? If JPN Squeenix says it's ok, then it ok. Otherwise we still wouldn't have Aerith/ Aeris

This. Applying English's mess of nonsense rules to a foreign language is just the prime example of why people consider Brits and Americans ignorant.

I guess this is similar to how Raiden is mispronounced in Mortal Kombat
