SMT in the last few years they had voice acting also calls it Ket She. I always thought calling a male cat Kate Sith was weird, cuz I thought it was Star Wars Sith with a female name despite being a male cat. None of it made sense to me

On Twitter. So the Japanese version pronounces it as Ketto Shi, which is closer to the Gaelic pronunciation. Max was trying to argue that Cait Sith (Kate Sihth) was the romanized pronunciation of that. He eventually said he had zero knowledge that Cait Sith existed outside of FF7 or that it was based on Gaelic language or any kind of folklore.

He later deleted several comments because he realized the assumption that Ketto Shi was the phrase "Cait Sith" in broken Japanese was kind of racist. He's now dialed back and is saying it should be Kett Shee instead if that's how it was originally intended to be said by Square.

I mean, we still get localizations that outright change character's names entirely. If I can be okay with that, I can deal with this too.

Guys... The west literally doesn't even pronounce the country of Japan's name correctly. Somehow, I think Kate Sith is fine.

Japan is just an English language name for Japan, it's used in Japan too. We sometimes call America Beikoku (actually that's the formal name on government forms), it's not a mispronunciation, just another name for it. Japan pretty much exclusively uses foreign created names for Japan (Nihon/Nippon comes from Chinese, as does Wa). Yamato is the only actual Japanese name for Japan.

"Japan" literally originated as a mispronounciation of Cipangu though, which was already a fairly inconsiderate name considering that's not what the Japanese called themselves at the time. It's a mispronounciation that's become normalized.

Ad purposely mispronouncing a cultural figure, and as I mentioned before, making a religious figure who is male, female, is insulting. Shiva is a major Hindu God. Hes male in Hinduism but they depict him as a woman in Final Fantasy. Square has a history of misrepresenting stuff like that

He shouldn't have been doing that granted, but a legit death threat isn't the answer to that regardless.

I feel his passive aggressive rant was largely started over people jumping on his nuts and insulting him when his initial post was largely innocuous. (Something about "there's the pronunciation, no gift subs.")

I wouldn't have expected Max to last long on Resetera. He generally seems very opinionated and not willing to fall in line if he thinks he's right.

Even beyond that, Shiva is often depicted with feminine traits as he and his wife represent the perfect union of feminine and masculine, to the point where the two blend together (Ardhanarishvara: The Lord who is Half Woman). It's hardly offensive as Zikten would make it to be.

Yeah, I like Max, but once he sets his headcanon to something, it rarely changes. It took like dozens of comments telling him about Gaelic and that Cait Sith did not originate from FF for him to finally acquiesce and research it (well, that and the threats).

For someone who has spent countless hours on FF7 lore, it's really weird that he was never made aware of that.

Nippon and Nihon are mispronunciations of the Chinese name. It's really not a big deal. No one in Japan finds the name Japan inconsiderate, we use the name all the time. International teams are called Team Japan, even in Japanese.

its not that he likes the game its that he acts like its the only jrpg ever to be good and that anything and everything in the genre owes its existence to 7

and that 7 remake is full of big brain energy and all this stuff

I find it interesting Reset Era apparently has the same politics as someone with a car bomb and being willing to use it on a developer for mispronouncing a name

the correct pronunciation is whatever square says it is because caith sith's name isn't from the real world it's from the FF7 world that as a different accents and culture
it doesn't have to be pronounce correctly because the correct way doesn't exist in the game

It was clearly based on Cait Sith, which is a Gaelic fairytale and therefore should be pronounced that way in the English dub too. SMT/Persona games respect the languages they borrow their demons from. Are English-speakers too above other languages to even attempt to pronounce their words properly?

It's "political" to be intelligent and understand how to pronounce names that come from other languages/cultures? People need to start feeling ashamed when they are objectively wrong again. We've lost that as a society. Being uneducated is not the finger to The Man you think it is.
