Impatience tax
The only "legitimate" reason (if that) is when a physical game is expected to be short-stocked, and/or it's a limited-run.

You can't miss out on a game coming out, its not like the 2000s where stores would sell out, and most preorders are digital anyway

If I already know I'm gonna get it and play it sometime soon and there's a discount (or preorder bonus) then why not tbh. Can refund it if it turns out to be buggy garbage. Starfield was a no brainer for me not because of Bethesda but because of the mod scene with those kinds of games

Pre-orders were only necessary to acquire certain low print run games that often would only be sold at gamestop due to their niche market. This was before the age of digital copies and online shopping.

These games also came with physical pre-order bonuses that were kind of cool to collect. Things like soundtracks, artbooks, actual underwear (Catherine in that case) etc.

For any other video game, yeah it's a scam. For gamestop it was an interest free "loan". That's why they push pre-orders so often. It's just why pre-order a game that has a thousand copies at your local walmart?

It makes sense for the Switch, where at least some of the increasingly massive filesizes are kept in the cartridge. Last I head, the other major consoles just downloaded the full game regardless, the disc is basically a token.

If you know you'll buy it, why not? That way, you can stop thinking about it, and it will be there on the day of release.

It's not like the price of a game is going to earn you much interest sitting in your account.

This is mostly why I do it. They also aren't gonna ship it to me day 1 if I wait until then to buy it.

I'm also confused by this. Someone has to get the game to see if it's good, so people are getting it on launch day anyway. Official reviews are out before launch game too so you'd know by then anyway.

I end up buying a lot of games day one anyways... so why not preorder, pay the same price, and get bonuses (both physical and digital) with it?

I also tend to get more deluxe or collectors editions so it's better to preorder those because those can run out...

For board games it is because some times the game will sell out (reprints can take months), or there is a steep discount. I backed Frosthaven on Kickstarter, and the price was $150. It's double that now.

With just how often devs straight up lie about what's in their games as well as how many games launch rife with gamebreaking bugs, why would you trust "how it looks" before anyone can get a good look at games?

Because I already know I'm going to buy it at launch anyway. So I just pre-order it and have it pre-loaded and ready to go the moment the release time hits. Most downloadable games are available to play the night before the official release date.

And if it turns out the game is an unmitigated disaster (hasn't happened with anything I've played yet), I have an opportunity to cancel the pre-order once the reviews start coming out. Or I can request a refund on Steam before I hit 2 hours of game time. So there's minimal risk for me

I preorder because I still prefer buying physical games when they're available and I want to make sure I can pick my copy up on day 1 without having to drive all over town to find it, especially if it's a popular title that's going to sell out quickly

It's also easier to just pay the game off when I have money to afford it rather than have launch day come around and realize I accidentally spent the money I had earmarked for it

Plus it's much faster and easier to either have the game shipped to me or just stop in somewhere on my way home from work and just pick it up at the customer service desk without hassle, rather than wander to the back of the store, wait for an employee to unlock the case, have them walk it back up to the front registers, then wait in line

But yeah for a digital only game, preordering is absolutely pointless unless it comes with some kind of extra thing at no extra cost

I only do it with things I have a fairly reasonable expectation that I'm going to enjoy it. Things like GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2, the latest Assassin's Creed or the Hitman games. Games that are continuations of series I have enjoyed. A new game with no experience in I wouldn't do that.
