A Texas jury has awarded a woman $1.2bn (944m) after ruling that she was the victim of revenge porn.
The woman, who was named only by the initials DL in court documents, filed a harassment lawsuit against her former boyfriend in 2022.
The suit alleged that he posted intimate pictures of her online to "publicly shame" her after a break-up.

I'm all in favor of the liability determination, but that damages award is beyond absurd, even without considering the fact that she will never collect it.

Guy didn't even go to court, good luck collecting that money.

A jury can name literally any number for some types of damages. There is almost always a statute that caps the amount though, which gets sorted out after the jury's findings. The news likes to report it in this way because they make money off sensationalism.

That and this was probably just a show upon a show by some one or another to try to say "hey, Texas cares about you non-straight/unwhite rights who are also not male. No, really mate, cause this judge actually just awarded aaaaalllll that" or something.

Or, maybe the judge meant well. But then went so far beyond the pale that they will now be the poster child of "antifa woke woke blah" for the next decade. Or maybe they meant unwell for this exact outcome. We shall see, or more accurately, attempt to see in the twilight years.

That would make sense. It would also explain those cases where the sentence is like hundreds of years in prison. When these kind of things are decided by a jury, it stands to reason the jury sometimes consists of a bunch of children (regardless of the actual age).

it could just be that they wanted him to keep paying her for the rest of his life, which is fair. in that case the fine would essentially be infinity @ a certain percentage of income. if that was the intent, I agree with it

Of course the real answer to how much money she will actually get depends on how much money the guy actually has, so we have no way of knowing.

At the end of the day it's better to name some absurd number and have it go way down to something "reasonable", than to name some "reasonable" number and then have it worked down to something that's a joke.

There's honestly absolutely zero defense to what this guy did so I don't see what the issue is.
