I met someone who makes big bucks in tech and he chooses to live in a working class neighborhood by choice because he prefers the people there

The fuck? Who wouldn�t prefer to live around richer or more well off people if they had the means?

I prefer the culture of a working/middle class neighborhood, but I also love my 3-car garage, which I can't get in more homey neighborhoods.

Oh well.

The stereotypical town for wealthy people to live in Indiana is Carmel. They and their spawn are insufferable.

No. I'd rather rural over anything else, but if I have to live in a neighborhood, give me a fairly safe middle class one rather than one full of rich snobs.

We just had the sale of our house fall through due to the HOA.

Bylaw states that if an outside dog gets 2 noise infractions for barking the owner must rehome them. Thatll give you an idea.

Not me. If given the chance, I'd choose to live somewhere with the fewest possible people around yet with the best possible internet.

Does it really matter? You just want good neighbors and a nice house I suppose.

Id prefer it, I live in a pretty nice place and dont ever plan on going back.

Nothing inherently wrong with them. Sometimes they are ludicrously strict tho. Sometimes they basically exist to make sure people aren't letting their yards get overgrown, which is preferable to no HOA at all. It just depends on where you live.

When you join a HOA you have to live by community rules. You just don't buy a house in an HOA and get to do whatever you want on your own property.

HOAs and incredibly snooty rich fucks. Give me the burbs any day.

I earn plenty of money but have a nice place surrounded by mostly less affluent people. I live on a small island and my apartment building is full of people with money, and theres two more that are, but the rest of the island is pretty poor.

I like it here.

They can fine you for not following rules as per HOA contract if it's there and at most they can take legal action for you not following HOA rules.

I think technically we could live in a richer neighborhood. I personally dont care for a bigger house (prefer to save for retirement & spend on vacations). And without an HOA I dont need permission to do whatever I want in my yard. My vegetable garden would definitely be considered an eyesore.

HOAs largely gained popularity because white people didn't want black people moving into their neighborhoods. they're a remnant of legislative segregation, and one way in which the US is kept functionally segregated

You sign an HOA agreement when you choose to live there. Just don't live in an HOA or rich gated community.

idk, on the one hand it would be a pain having to hire people to maintain a house to keep the association I pay $2000 a month to happy.

On the other hand, I have zero friends already and could get by never leaving my house, especially a nice one.

So it all really depends. Like out here the Carmel area / 17 mile drive is amazing, if I could get a house there I'd probably never go anywhere.

This is why I live in a city where there isnt always this delineation

being on an isthmus there are areas with million+ dollar homes on the lake with low income apartments right next door

there are richer areas, sure, but there is still a lot of diversity in income even in those places

Racism is awful in wealthy neighborhoods where I live so it's got me biased.

Rich people are annoying and entitled.
They have too much time on their hands so everything is a big issue

Ill take the clean hoa rich neighborhood over anywhere remotely close to a check cashing place, gas station, bus stop, etc

Wow I expected those kind of people to be just as busy as working class or middle-class people
