There's just as much original content as ever, if not more. If you aren't seeing it that's on you.
True. I see so many original films every year, but others choose not to while bemoaning the lack of original films.

1 is a a new entry in an on-going series. The other is another inferior Disney remake. How are the differing results noteworthy?

It's so frustrating seeing them stagnate and people bitch that it's because of all these sequels and remakes crowding them out but no, it's because YOU and people like you didn't fucking go see and support them.

There are original films being made, and in abundance, but if you're specifically talking about big budget movies from big studios with insane marketing then yes you will be seeing a lot of remakes, sequels, squeakquels, etc. because they're safe. New IP's will always carry some form of risk and the odds of them getting a big budget to stand up to the likes of MCU movies are going to be miniscule.

I checked my spreadsheet for movies I saw that were released in 2023. Here are the ones that are not sequels, remakes or some kind of franchise:

Past Lives
Air
Asteroid City
The Covenant
Nimona
The Blackening
Joy Ride
Sisu
No Hard Feelings
Infinity Pool
M3GAN
Plane
Champions
Polite Society
Cocaine Bear
The Boogeyman
Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre
Knock at the Cabin
Hypnotic
65
Beau is Afraid

Sadly I've only seen two of those, Knock at the Cabin and M3gam, both at home :( But I'm also seeing less movies just in general because it's so expensive

This. At this point both sides just want products to succeed to talk shit about their opponents. It's hilarious.

Both cost about the same (mission impossible more so). Both launched about the same. Both are projecting to do similar numbers but everywhere on the internet little mermaid is being dragged but mission impossible is going unscathed. Both had similar expectations/hype

Whats going on
Look at the star of MI7 and then look at the star of TLM.

I highly recommend Past Lives. Will likely be up for Best Picture, Actress and Original Screenplay. Possibly Director and Supporting Actor as well.

The Little Mermaid has quietly stuck around the top 10 for a couple months now. A few outlets are reporting it either has broken even, or is very close to breaking even. It's not the success Disney wanted, but I wouldn't call it a flop at this point. Under-performed is probably a better term.

We will see this weekend how well Dead Reckoning holds up with Barbie and Oppenheimer soaking up all the premium screens. I don't see it reaching the heights of Fallout, and since it cost $100M more than Fallout to make, that's not ideal.

Now this is true. But this wasn't stated before. You said they would do similar numbers. They won't. But yes, they will both likely lose a little money theatrically, and maybe be similar from that aspect.

However, both movies were hurt by Covid delays and protocols. I saw something about how the Little Mermaid budget was $200M but Covid pushed it to $250M. We know Dead Reckoning is $290, but not what it should have been. I am guessing it was hit by more than $50M as it had more delays and issues than Little Mermaid.

Personally, I don't think either movie should be considered a flop based on this. Let's reserve the flop terminology for the recent DC movies and Indiana Jones.

This is a level headed and accurate response. Both movies may be a net positive when all other things are considered (ancillary income plus streaming content) but one is widely touted as a flop and the other isnt when both will hit similar level success for their studios, both had a lot of hype and both are big franchises

It's almost like one is a remake of a beloved classic while the other is sequel number whatever.

Wording is everything.

One is a remake in a series of mixed received to underwhelming remakes, one is a sequel to multiple well received titles with arguably the biggest star in the world right now

See how it works

Agree. And I realize that your point was that the industry has treated them differently. I think the industry was unfair to The Little Mermaid. I also think the industry is afraid to cross Tom Cruise lol

If it means anything, my 4 daughters adored The Little Mermaid, and I thought it was surprisingly decent (other than the murky underwater CGI)

Mission Impossible was awesome of course, but Fallout is still my favorite of the series.

Except it's not part of a series, nice try though. You can call it a trend, but then your attempt doesn't work.

I feel like the issue with movies is most people don't want to spend these crazy high ticket and concession prices unless it's a big name director or franchise, and even then, the whims of the public are unguessable.

Except not, not anymore of a "series" when the animated movies were released. It's not a continuation of anything, it shares no characters, it's a remake of a beloved classic. Mission Impossible is a sequel with a Part 1 in the title. Nobody gives a shit, people give a shit about their beloved classic.

Im not even an MI fan and saying nobody gives a shit about it is ridiculous when its like FnF except its actually taken seriously.

Or at least as serious as what crazy stunts can Tom Cruise pull off this time instead of what physics will cars/Dom/FAMILY break next.

That's because those movies sell like hotcakes in China. If I were to be bothered to look I'd bet both franchises have made way more money overseas than domestic.
