Both cost about the same (mission impossible more so). Both launched about the same. Both are projecting to do similar numbers but everywhere on the internet little mermaid is being dragged but mission impossible is going unscathed. Both had similar expectations/hype

I seen them both before. Little mermaid came out in the 90s. Mission impossible came out atleast 6 times before.

Little Mermaid had a black actress playing a role that had been previously portrayed as white.

Mission Impossible has a lead actor that is of the "non-political" race.

Mission Impossible also flopping hurts the narrative that the "woke agenda" is the main problem with Hollywood, so they just quietly sweep the movie under the rug like it didn't happen

MI will have legs. Also the budget ballooned because of covid. It was half the budget before shutdowns. That and profiting on $300mil+ budgets is just an insane expectation for any movie.

Mission impossible 7 is projected to make tops 40mil in china. Fallout made 140 mil so theres 100mil lost. Its running similar or less number in the US with barbie/oppenheimer about to destroy

Its doing well everywhere else but it wont even hit fallout numbers

MI 7 has legs to go off from. It's apples to oranges comparison, but Top Gun Maverick also took time to take off before it made over a billion dollars off the BO. Little Mermaid? Not soo much. I'm sure there's a lot of hate for Little Mermaid for having a black actress, but most of the well deserved hate is simply being inferior over the animated movies... you know like almost all of the live action flicks. I wish Disney would go after all the IP's they had that flopped or got bad reviews and make those into live action movies but try to improve on them, instead of taking something already great and making something worst.

I can see why there would be flops with so much competition at the box office. People only have so much money to spend on movie tickets.

This is wrong , though. Most of the people who've actually seen the film think it was very good. So anyone having the idea you mentioned had likely not seen it.

You're right, I never saw it but almost everyone that I know that has seen it all come to the same conclusion, it's inferior to the animated movie. This isn't just unique to Little Mermaid though, but all of the Disney live action, with maybe an exception to Jungle Book and Cinderella live action movies.

It doesn't matter to the reactionary right.

Super Mario bros. was super woke feminist anti-men until it did gangbusters in box office returns.

Then they came up with new reasons why it was actually anti-woke all along, and previous narratives never existed.

Yeah this shit makes no sense to me. Princess Peach is everything that the anti-woke crowd hates in female characters, but yet she gets a free pass because Mario movie made billions and it fit into their agenda of being "anti-Disney". If the movie flopped, no doubt they would've targeted Princess Peach as the main culprit.

Thing is, Peach is basically whatever she needs to be for each iteration. Sometimes damsel in distress, sometimes stoic and noble princess, sometimes just a generic girl audience stand in, sometimes a hot tempered hero.

It's a silly cartoon franchise based on action platformer, racing, and party games, with minimal story.

Damn that shit is hilarious, all they have to do was pretend they never had conflicting opinions and ofc their pathetic chuddy fans never call it out either

At least when movies like Captain Marvel or TROS didn't "flop" from wokeness they blamed it on "paid reviewers" and still stuck to their delusions but with Mario they switched gears fast

Whatever gets them the bag I guess lol

Tom Cruise has it in his contract that his likeness cannot be used in merchandising. He had Funko Pop to pull a toy of his character from The Mummy even though it was borderline faceless.

Because theres nothing controversial about MI7.

As to why movies are flopping, I would imagine most movies are flopping simply because over the pandemic people got used to sitting on their couch streaming them live shortly after release on HBO Max instead of going to the theater and spending $10+ per ticket and probably $20 for a large popcorn and soda the way prices are these days.

I think the smart thing is to save the theater experience for things that are worth it, like the Dune movie for example would probably benefit a lot from IMAX.

With how inflation and how expensive shit is, I don't blame people especially with big families, to just wait for movies to on VOD for the price of a movie ticket. Plus when you release blockbuster after blockbuster without giving it room to breathe, the profits are gonna be halved or short. The studios shot themselves in the foot with the scheduling of blockbusters

There's really not many other action franchises that deserve a theatrical viewing as much as MI does.

This is exactly why. Add to it that budgets for these current films were inflated due to COVID and that's why we're at this point. Things still haven't normalized to pre-pandemic levels.

Little Mermaid is at about $550 and not making hardly any more.

Dead Reckoning is running about 15% ahead of Fallout after about a week, and that is accounting for the dropoff in China. But once again, the legs will be hurt by Barbenheimer, so I don't think it will hit Fallout levels.

What I wrote in post 28 still holds true.

Now this is true. But this wasn't stated before. You said they would do similar numbers. They won't. But yes, they will both likely lose a little money theatrically, and maybe be similar from that aspect.

However, both movies were hurt by Covid delays and protocols. I saw something about how the Little Mermaid budget was $200M but Covid pushed it to $250M. We know Dead Reckoning is $290, but not what it should have been. I am guessing it was hit by more than $50M as it had more delays and issues than Little Mermaid.

Personally, I don't think either movie should be considered a flop based on this. Let's reserve the flop terminology for the recent DC movies and Indiana Jones.
