This is definitely how they felt for me at first, but in my second and third playthroughs it felt like they were moving in slow motion lol.

And then there's the Sisters of Battle in Godhome! That's probably the best fight in the game and it's crazy that they made it so optional and hard to access.

idk though, most of the good ones I've played you've listed. I guess I'd recommend the Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap remake. It's pretty simplistic since it's based on an 80s game, but it has upgrade-based progression and an interconnected world and the graphics are great. You can also beat it in roughly 3-5 hours depending on how much you want to do.

You sound like you're describing Watcher Knights to me.

Just want to say that I love how diverse this genre has become. I've played probably ~100 metroidvanias and adjacent games (even without counting stuff like Zelda and Dark Souls) and I still haven't played half the games recommended in this topic. Some of them I haven't even heard of!

fyi, I still somehow haven't bought anything. A friend bought me a short game (which I've completed,) but I'm in such deadlock over all these options you've all given me. There's a reasonable argument I should just stick to my backlog...but...but...Steam sale...!
