Considering how small it is, I doubt they even have air left if it's still intact:

No way it will be sucessful, it does not seem like anyone actually cares or gives a fuck, kind of sad that 5 lives are at stake and everyone is standing around twiddling their thumbs. I hate humanity.

These people spent $250K to do a thing that was made very clear to them comes with a considerable risk of death. Even without considering the likelihood of their survival or the spent resources and risks of any attempt at rescue, why does not caring about this make anyone hate worthy? Most of us agree that this sort of unregulated device shouldn't exist in the first place

I think its more the difference between not caring and some people actively celebrating the issue. Or maybe its just a perceived lack of empathy people are getting hung up on.

The tourists were paying a lot of money to make this trip happen, so I'm sure it was a case of the operators not wanting to pass up the cash even if it was risky and/or the millionaires throwing their money at the situation until they got what they wanted.

If nothing else, tragic hubris is on brand for the location.

From I have seen in the media sounds like at best they are deep underwater or at the surface. At worst the submersible blew up and they are already dead. And with the best case scenario if they arent found in 3-4 days they are dead regardless if the submersible is intact.

So odds seem to point toward them not making it. And I wouldnt go on a trip like that. I dont really have interest in seeing the Titanic wreck.

not really. First off, just finding this submersible in the ocean would be like finding a hay in a needlestack just because of how dark it is, then I don't think anything they sent down to find it would be as properly equipped as it should to be able to hoist it back to the surface. However supposedly the ballasts that weigh it down are supposed to dissolve within 16~24 hours so it should automatically float back up to the surface if it isn't entangled in anything. However the submersible has no beacon to signal where it is and it's unable to be opened from the inside

so hopefully they're floating around on the ocean surface waiting to be rescued before they run out of air, I think that's honestly the only shot for rescuing survivors

CBS News journalist David Pogue, who traveled to Titanic aboard the Titan last year, said the vehicle uses two communication systems: text messages that go back and forth to a surface ship and safety pings that are emitted every 15 minutes to indicate that the sub is still working.

Both of those systems stopped about an hour and 45 minutes after the Titan submerged.

"There are only two things that could mean. Either they lost all power or the ship developed a hull breach and it imploded instantly. Both of those are devastatingly hopeless, Pogue told CBC on Tuesday.

The submersible had seven backup systems to return to the surface, including sandbags and lead pipes that drop off and an inflatable balloon. One system is designed to work even if everyone aboard is unconscious, Pogue said.

Experts said the rescuers face steep challenges.

Alistair Greig, a professor of marine engineering at University College London, said submersibles typically have a drop weight, which is a mass they can release in the case of an emergency to bring them up to the surface using buoyancy.

If there was a power failure and/or communication failure, this might have happened, and the submersible would then be bobbing about on the surface waiting to be found, Greig said.

source: https://www.wftv.com/news/rescuers-race/COGFN6LLTWS4P4QRW5KF5VEVBA/

So there is a chance of rescue, but a very slim one. And even in the best case scenario, that they're all alive and floating on the surface of the ocean, they'd still have to be found before they use all of their air, and that clock is ticking.

Also i reckon commercial submarine is just so niche and isn't heavily regulated. Isn't the invisible hand of the market beautiful? They knew its a problem but will not be a problem legally until shit happens, so they chose to be cheap and shit actually happen they are in a bigger trouble.

Nah. Cameron worked with established undersea exploration agencies. This company is more like comparing SpaceX to NASA, where it foregoes safety standards in exchange for speed of development and accepts that the occasional explosion is better than red tape.

Newer technology, but (from the BBC article):
OceanGate says it is an experimental vessel, and when CBS travelled onboard the correspondent had to sign a waiver accepting that it "has not been approved or certified by any regulatory body, and could result in physical injury, disability, emotional trauma or death".

In a press release in 2019, the company explained why the Titan had not been classed by an independent body. "Bringing an outside entity up to speed on every innovation before it is put into real-world testing is anathema to rapid innovation," it said.

In a promotional video, OceanGate Expeditions software security expert Aaron Newman tells prospective clients that travelling on the sub is "not a ride at Disney, you know".

"There's a lot of real risk involved, and there's a lot of challenges," he says.

But in 2018, submersible experts expressed "unanimous concern" over the experiment approach taken by Oceangate when building the Titan and warned of potential "catastrophic" issues with its design.

In a letter to Mr Rush unearthed by the New York Times, the Marine Technology Society said the company was making "misleading" claims about its design exceeding established industry safety standards.

To expand on the analogy, the Dragon capsule has no physical controls. Just a touchscreen.

The submersible didn't even have that. Just a single button.

Not sure why a tether isn't mandated for these kinds of submersibles.

People care, but realistically, it's damn near impossible that they're still alive or going to be found alive. It sucks but it's better to accept that fact rather than hope for the impossible. If Kursk, K-129, Thresher, and Scorpion all sunk with all hands, and those were actually designed properly, why would this glorified piece of pipe they're in have a chance?

Add to that, the Coast Guard really doesn't know what they're doing here. Underwater search and rescue isn't exactly a well tested field. The Navy knows how to search, and they found the Thresher in short order, but even now they'd have a hard time actually rescuing anyone. Navy Submariners tend towards "if something goes wrong, I'll die down here" thinking.
