Yep. Still remember downloading songs on dial up internet. Me, my dad, and my sister were all on it. I skipped Limewire and went to Kazaa.

napster was before my time online. my primary source of music online in the early 00s was windows music player (a lot of the media streamed was direct links to wma and mp3 files), directories of music i found on google later on, and the occasional fansite. most heavily listened to midi files in the mid-00s rather than mp3s, so those weren't hard to come by. briefly dabbled in filesharing software by way of frostwire in college (late 00s), but the quality variance bothered me. in my early college years i especially swore by imeem.

I got into torrents for a while, mostly for older PC games that I couldn't find anywhere in the early 2010s. But by the mid-2010s it seemed like everything was on the internet somewhere. I could just google "movie title streaming" and a million websites would pop up that had it streaming, no download necessary. By then Steam or GOG had pretty much any PC game I would ever want to play too, so there wasn't really any need to pirate anymore. Past my teenage years the only things I would ever pirate were things I couldn't elsewhere, like if a show wasn't on a streaming service or an old game wasn't available anymore. If I could buy it, I usually would.

Dude I had one of those mp3 CD players and it felt so fucking cool to be able to skip through my folders on a CD. I didn't have bluetooth in my car until around 2015, so until then those CDs were how I avoided listening to the radio for years.

Same. Always had a mix of different genres.

And everybody would have CD binders full of CD-Rs and CD-RWs and their real ones too.

Yea I also used WinMX. It was a slower p2p I think but it felt safer than Kazaa or Kazaa lite.

Also it helped me to decide what cds I wanted to buy with my actual income at the time too.

Nah cuz I was too young and dumb to figure it out. I did use Limewire though. RIP even though it was full of viruses. "Eminem-LoseYourself.mp3.exe" that was only 50kb definitely wasn't a song lol

My cousin would use Kazaa all the time. idk what that was like though.

IIRC, FrostWire started as a secondary thing after the RiAA came after several p2p programs, including LimeWire. Same devs

So originally Limewire was completely free. Eventually free and premium versions were released. The free was ad supported, and like Kazaa lite, this spawned Frostwire a fork/version. Ads like this were seen as adware/malware and were not accepted like they are today. There were other reasons as well.
