Just shoot the crows and snakes.
Also, use the bolt gun when you do because you can recollect the ammo for it.

I shot pigs, chickens, and cows, and they dont drop anything. Only crows and snakes do

Most fish you can just knife. The only ones you should shoot are the ones at the dock on the lake.

So is it confirmed that chickens don't drop eggs on death? They still drop them while alive, though.

If it wasn't for the series giving you less ammo than a Kroger's would, I'd say shoot whatever. That is normally how I play games.

But here, in...Village-land or something, it's best to conserve.

I just knifed a rat in chapter 2 and "1 out of 3" appeared on the screen. After two more I got an in game completion of "pest control".

Merchant request. Look for the blue piece of paper when you get to him.

When you get to the jetty, make sure you shoot the lake a few times. It may not seem like you're hitting anything but you'll get a pleasant surprise.

Not every rat is tied to a merchant request just FYI. If unsure, can check by knifing them anyway and youll see that count come up if they are, otherwise nothing will happen.

I think I found a secret.

At the point where you return to the village with a key and the bell tower blows up. While right before you return you can see a zombie on higher ground that runs away when he spots you. If you shoot and kill him, the monster dogs won't appear at the bell tower.
