I narrowed it down to these three after eliminating Crystal, FRLG, and Emerald.

What do

why do people love HGSS so much, I thought it was fine but it's so many people's favorites. Gen 4 kind of sucked.

Oh yeah, that's probably true, too. Pokathalon, Safari Zone, Battle Frontier, second region, gym leader rematches, E4 upgrade, Red, Pokwalker, and most importantly, your lead pokeyman following you outside the ball.

I even remember the day I bought HGSS lol. They are good games for sure though.

Of those three, I'd vote for HG/SS, but Platinum is also a fantastic choice. I do want to ask though: Why is B2/W2 not an option? You don't really need the story from B/W (and even if you did you can just watch it on YouTube or read about it) to enjoy B2/W2, and it added tons of new features while also fixing many of B/W's flaws. It's almost as big of a leap from B/W as Platinum was from D/P.

HGSS is great but it runs like ass. Way better than DP did though.

It technically is a sequel, but it's not so much of a sequel that you need to play the first game before it, especially with how "meh" the stories in mainline Pokemon games tend to be. The amount of extra enjoyment you'd get from B2/W2 due to having played B/W first is small, and at this point I might even argue that playing B/W first might actually be a worse experience due to how similar the games are (5 of the gym leaders and all of the Elite Four are the same in both) and how objectively better in every single possible way B2/W2 is compared to B/W gameplay-wise.

IMO, it's in the top tier of mainline Pokemon games along with Platinum and HG/SS.

OR/AS is great. It didn't bring back all of the stuff from Emerald (the lack of any sort of Battle Frontier especially sucks) but it still added a ton of other new stuff along with borrowing a lot of good things added in other generations since. Plus, it also added a whole extra post-game story where you could catch a Pokemon that was previously only obtainable in events yourself for the very first time. OR/AS isn't in the top tier that I mentioned above, but I think it's in the next tier down. It's still really good and worth playing.

Yeah ORAS ain't bad. Adds in tons of QoL features over the originals, integrates mega evolutions really well, the pokemon look good, and it adds in a really cool postgame story that earns you some nifty legendaries. The lack of battle frontier is a shame though. There's even a place in the game that seems like it would have housed one as dlc, but that never happened.
