No need to keep being racist dude, holy shit

There is a reason I used Krakozia as an example.

Krakozia doesn't exist. Krakozians and their race don't exist either. The talk is based on how Tom Hanks, in The Terminal spoke (e.g. "is for goat, medicine for goat"). There's no racism there, give me a break

Check out The Odin Project's foundations course, if you don't mind doing a juicy amount of reading.

The most advanced stuff, from an IT perspective, that my college lab did was VBA macros. Nothing fancy. Most academic labs I was familiar with would either only take student volunteers, but I was at a SLAC. I did interview for a job at a large university lab once and I feel like I humiliated myself, though they ultimately didn't hire anyone and told me I didn't say/do anything wrong.

On Odin Project: depends on if you're adverse to/disinterested in stuff like introductory JavaScript, VSCode, and navigating a Linux shell/terminal. In my case it made sense for me because I have an interest in full-stack development, even if from a Java apps angle. Also got me into the groove on using GitHub properly. I doubt I'll do the more advanced paths anytime soon (they have two: Ruby on Rails and JS), but they're plenty interesting. I just have more urgent priorities atm.

I noticed a lot of people are 'bleh' on Udemy but I learned one fuck of a lot from it (and have always been patient about waiting for sales--of which, they have many). Even if it can slow things down, I ultimately learn way more from video courses than I do from textbooks and courses that are mostly articles--doesn't matter how many times people told me to just pound through a bunch of books.

Took a lengthy video course awhile back from a no-nonsense PhD and put myself to work. Guy was supposed to be teaching programming without any pre-reqs, yet I ended up picking up on all sorts of high-level crap because he couldn't help but go there. It was amazing what I got out of it. Learned more than I did in all of the Java courses I had in college combined. Easily.

my go to was always some kind of game like that

i guess my question would be thoughwhy C? Why not something a bit more user-friendly?

I would find something youre comfortable with (if theres something youre more comfortable with than C) and build something from there. Because any practice is practice, and it doesnt make sense to force yourself to do something that isnt working for you

I feel like practically everybody (in the IT world) should know how to install a VM. Odin explains how to do it quickly, yet in a foolproof way. First experiences I had with Xubuntu (had used Ubuntu before, among others--one of the colleges I attended actually had a Red Hat lab). Really enjoyed it a lot, and still have the VM on my system (I've learned to prefer doing GitHub from the command line rather than using the online editor... which has issues, such as fucking up your indentations).

I was actually just modifying my old tic-tac-toe project an hour or two ago. I had based it off a tutorial from GeeksForGeeks, of all things.

I'm not sure what motivates me to keep tooling with my old stuff. They're not resume items or anything I'll develop into apps on a store. Guess it's just an a d d i c t i o n

TOP is such a can't-lose prospect. Free, no grade-related stress, no need to wait on response to projects because you know if you had the right idea or not (and if you didn't, you can check out other people's projects and learn from them). If it doesn't apply to someone they can quit and not feel they really gave up or anything, because as their website says, it isn't really intended to be thought of as a traditional course.

Man wtf whats with people ITT not advocating for themselves

you should be well into 6 figures with that kind of experience. I get being comfortable but you could be making so much more money, building up a nest egg for retirement or whatever it is you would be doing with 50% more money each year

They also gave the best health insurance for $30 a month which is a HUGE savings. I also got a $10k bonus for Christmas, so it's not all about just the pay. The health insurance has changed due to the COVID stuff but it is still far and away the best insurance I can get for a couple hundred a month (my wife and I are on the plan). 401k match, profit sharing and all that too so while on paper I might make high 5 figures I am more than likely making over 6 taking all of those other things into account. And as I said, this job is basically a cake walk where there's no real pressure on it and I went to college / have known the people directly above me for decades.

The whole goal of this and our own internal restructuring is such that in a couple years, we can spin off of our parent company and be a true software development one. We would still work under the companies umbrella, but we would essentially be free to take outside projects and have more control over our own business. It is extremely exciting.

0 industry experience on cpp, but it was my first language and my preferred language through school. Nowadays I'm pretty much a dedicated dotnet/c# duderino who dabbles in frontend languages.

Lol, well the place that was teaching me was real shady..I can tell you this.

We do use Css, javasript, and html. In fact, most of the front end and back end is pretty much based off of the those those technologies.
Apex is just Java with DML operations (for the most part).

So I can jump into Java and have a slightly easier time to learn that. But I learned pretty much most of the full stack concept from Salesforce.
I know what MVC is. I learned about the snapshot of a web page. I learned about web api and integrations. So while I am skeptical about Salesforce myself. I do believe I can learn some of the mainstream stuff a but easier because of it.

Edit: I am Mega skeptical but it is popping up everywhere. They pay well and most places want you to have knowledge of other technol anyway.

Oh yes, I didn't mean "leave that". If it's paying you and you enjoy it, that's great! Plus, a job is a job.

All I meant was, don't bank your future 10, 15 years from now on it, which it seems you're not, since you're still using web dev skills such as java, css, html, etc, which means you could jump to a different job if sales force ever goes under

Hmm, that's a tough one. So you want a number to be randomize without going through an iteration?

I am not the best at this, but wouldn't that give the same number? What is the other input? Where are you getting the unique number?

The idea is a random-access psuedo-random.
I want the millionth value of say, seed=5 to spit out a number that's the same every time, while 999999 and 1000001 at look random in comparison, without having to actually call rand() a million and one times.

If nobody has any ideas, I may just screw around with dividing primes or something.

I saw an hours breakdown that looked look it would be similar to doing the Odin paths (especially considering that Odin JS and RoR paths have a lot of cross over). Feels like it would be overkill to do both Odin and FSO, but curiosity will probably lead me to (eventually) do it anyway.

Like Odin it has a dedicated official discord server, and it also has an unofficial discord server in which you can ask specific questions about any of the parts.

I joined the Odin discord but left because I didn't feel like giving over my phone number at the time.

Unit tests are most useful for parts of code that have complexity to them - like engineering math or geometry calculations etc. Things that you need to really make sure produces the right answers.

I never understood people making unit tests for button clicks calling whatever function. Those seem like just pointless churn unit tests that don't really add any value.

Unit tests are good - but be smart about it and don't be overboard. It's like programmers that add a comment to EVERY line of code - it's really not necessary and clean, well-written code doesn't need that on ever line. Only on the non-obvious bits.

Something I'll add about applying for jobs/moving on to bigger and better things: although I'm not quite at a six-figure salary, my current position has a lot of perks and I'm guaranteed a good evaluation (therefore, more security, more $) every time unless I somehow fuck up badly. As much as I'd like to be in the 100k+ club (I will be eventually, anyway) and work only remotely (or close to only), I'd have to have an offer that straight-up swept me off my feet to consider leaving.
