Currently joining Discord servers for software developers/engineers, and I know there are a few of you on CE so here's a thread, too.

Take that! and don't forget a semicolon, the compiler won't recognize that your statement is over otherwise

Presently doing a Udemy course in JUnit/Mockito/MockMVC. Nothing complicated, I just never really learned to do unit testing for myself.

That is the nicest compliment I have been paid in awhile.

(if I was actually useful, I'd work a job that actually allows me to put the software development skills I do have to use.)

this is why I like kotlin, really got used to not using semicolons over my past year of learning it

anyway I started a new dev job last week after getting laid off a couple months ago. Liking it so far

Seems like thats the software dev career path

either you move up to management and stop coding, or find a different job to get a raise

myself Im not sure if Ill ever want to manage. Im only ~4 years into my career at this point tho

Maybe Im jaded having just been laid off, but I feel like a significant raise is worth way more than job security

I think part of the reason I was selected to be let go is I had expressed my dissatisfaction over a lack of raise (that I had been told I would get)

It took me 2 months to find a new role but Im making so much more now that Ill still make more this calendar year than I would have if I had not only stayed at my previous job but also gotten the raise I wanted.

Hardest part is getting started, but I can't blame anyone for being so annoyed by how challenging it initially is that they stop there. I had given up for years.

I just did some front-end shit that would've taken me hours to do before in a few minutes of work, and I had fun doing it. Good times.

Still been working on my project in Unity every day, making slow progress but every step is still progress, or learning something new

gotta remind myself that I have 30+ years of work ahead of me, theres no rush to do anything

Id also keep in mind that a big part of learning to code is actually learning how to learn how to code

you're never going to know everything, and youre going to spend a lot of time even deep into your career reading documentation, googling, and learning new things

Think of a research field that might interest you and see if there are data science jobs in that field.

Programming is a lot more engaging if you are doing it for a meaningful cause like cancer or public health research.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

The initial learning curve can be steep but it gets way better after a few months of your first language. It's like learning to drive different cars at that point. Like every car is going to handle differently but knowing traffic laws stay with you forever.

this is definitely not one size fits all advice lol

i personally definitely have no interest in working on something with the high stakes of public health

remains to be seen of course but I am totally okay staying in fun fields like consumer products, luxury items and apps, etc

Truth. I took a high-end Java video course and wrote out a bunch of notes on Panera receipts and kept studying it again and again, and commenting code with all sorts of stuff. The pieces began falling into place once my brain adjusted.

I mean yea you have to be consistent. You won't really get in shape by exercising on and off either.

Easy, most of it is terrible.

And more importantly, gamefaqs doesn't readily make working on code collaboratively easy.

It's easier to join a proper discord or slack.

Something I've learned is that with high level concepts notes help me out big time, even though I never re-consult them other than just after I write them. It helps reinforce the concepts, get me to meditate on the logic of things, etc.

With smaller concepts, notes can actually slow me down, so I play it course-by-course, video-by-video, etc. If I'm just jotting things down without really understanding, I'll make sure to put a freeze on my course or whatever I'm doing and just keep thinking it over and consulting other resources until it makes sense to me. Doesn't necessarily have to be a perfect understanding, but of what I'm doing in principle. Can then reinforce with other videos/articles/projects/etc.

I've thought about what it would take for me to make a change, and it'd have to be a dream job scenario. 90-100% remote, full stack development, absence of workplace politics, etc.

Unity and Unreal are free to use if you ever get the itch! they each have a marketplace for assets if you don't particularly care about learning how to model/animate.

Unreal's Blueprint scripting system in particular is a pretty intuitive way to get started with game scripting/event-based logic flow etc. But it's been a while since I've used either, so I'm not sure what their online support/documentation's like these days.
