I remember when DBFZ came out and the youtube comments, instead of being amazed about how cool it looked and that it looked like a legit fighting game, were mad it was "2D" and not 3D like all the budget ass arena fighter games. And I get it, arena fighters sell well. I've yet to play a good arena fighter game though, the closets was that Kill la Kill game and it was basically dead on arrival lol. 2D fighters aren't the "sexiest" games to sell marketing wise, but they tend to be games that tend to age better than most 3D games.
