The first one is more akin to Mario Land than the rest of the series. Wario Land 2 is where they start to really experiment with it, then Wario Land 3 is THE quintessential Wario Land game. It's like mini Metroid levels, where completing objectives in a level will open paths in multiple other levels. Something like 60/100 objectives are completely optional, but you can still kind of do most of the game in any order you like. It's a master stroke in game design. Wario Land 4 is like completely different, but still a really good game. It's 4 short worlds, each with like 4 or 5 levels. But the way the game is structured is you need to find 4 treasures in a level, then flip an hourglass, then the exit opens up, but you need to race a clock to reach the exit in time.
