I am a Network Engineer - I feel like more of an administrator and less of an engineer.

I fix shit that goes down a lot more than Im heatmapping / engineering new links and networks. Also I play a lot of video games at my desk.

It's pretty accurate. I'm on the part of the network team that handles a lot of branch locations. We're opening a number of new locations this year and each of us are assigned one location to configure the network infrastructure.

I've also been learning Python in the past 7 months or so and now I have some network-focused coding projects.

At one point in my career here, I carried the nonsensical title of "Vice-Manager" which idk how that's different from an Assistant Manager and neither did anyone else, but that's what my business cards said

Lol my company is too small for multi-tiered departments. I am one of two engineers. The other one is my boss, the manager.

Did I mention were an ISP with ~9k customers between WISP and fiber?

Ive also been delving into Python for general automations to optimize / troubleshoot for us, but its slow going since theres so few of us were constantly on our toes for the next alert. I have an AS in computer science so the language isnt a problem, mostly coming up with projects.

Have any good networking-specific Python resources to recommend to give me project ideas?

2022 was insanely busy and we had the most successful year ever. Now it's pretty quiet though. Still feeling the effects of covid, the high inflation and such. Looks like it will be picking up around march though.

I know the feeling. At my old job, I was the only network engineer. It was fine at first because they only had about ~330 employees and 2 buildings. They grew to about 12 or 13 buildings and over 1000 employees and they still didn't want to hire anyone to help me. That resulted in me constantly working 60 - 80 hour weeks. It was exhausting.

So far, I've just been using freecodecamp.org's Youtube channel to learn Python. I've got a couple scripts written, but I'm working on more things. ChatGPT is also useful for getting a basic code framework built for things I want to do. Then I just tweak it so that it works in our environment and add to it as necessary.

There's nothing 'senior' about what I do lol; they just slapped that part on after a year of service. Software Support Engineer fits more with what I do.

Logistics Associate, and I guess kind of both relevant and not; its a position that was created for a short term project. I work for a volunteer driven disaster relief non-profit that, domestically, focuses on restoring peoples homes that were damaged by natural disasters. I am currently working on an organizational level Logistics department project but not involved in the regular Logistics work much. I was previously the Logistics Coordinator on a program handling basically all of the day to day Logistics stuff there.

The organization has decided to move our Logistics department and distribution center from Massachusetts, where the rarely used anymore because now we have people working remotely from all over the world main office is, to a more central location for reaching programs along the Gulf coast. I was pulled from the on program job to be in charge of doing the breakdown of our current warehouse, going through everything we have and scaling down what we keep on hand going forward. There has been a real problem with people just accepting anything that was offered for several years, so there is a ton of stuff that Ive been going through and determining what needs to be recycled/dumped, what to donate, and what to try to sell to recoup costs of the department move.

Its getting into the final stages of break down and last few weeks here before we close this one down and the job switches to setting up a more efficient system for going forward, thats the part Im really excited about being part of.

Most days I feel like I'm running an adult day care. But when shit hits the fan it really hits the fan.

Some people disagree but I feel the entry level of my job should qualify as supervisory exiperence. I mean my job is literally to make people who are locked up cause they can't follow the law to follow rules. And often times stupid ass rules.

Depending on size of company and efficiency in delegating specific task loads based on expertise/experience, it is definitely a real thing. There are different tiers of engineers. I am realistically a tier 1 engineer as Ive only been in IT 3 yrs.

Or it might come up as Senior Network Engineer, etc. Same thing though.

ISP engineers only care about infrastructure issues and relaying said issues to other departments to relay to customers / update outage maps.

Assuming they did their job correctly and there are no outages in your area, blame the outsourced call center rep who cant even read modem/ONT signal strength in a fancy little GUI or employ basic critical thinking skills to diagnose your local network issues.

UFCW meat assist. Yeah it's a union job. I also float between the meat shops. The one they sent me to today is a piece of work. It's in one of those super small side of the road stores. Basically the kind of store you wouldn't do any real shopping at. maybe run in so you don't have to go further down the road. Came in to a mostly full fresh meat case so I'm not too sure wtf I should be doing lmao.

Ngl I dont know what UFCW stands for so my first thought went to ultimate fighting championship. Then the meat assist part got me thinking does he assist them with.. their meat, or does he act as a piece of meat for them to practice fighting technique.. before reading the rest.

Wine Sales Rep

Previously in management at one of the best restaurants in my city. Finally burned out of the industry as a whole and now I'm working at a small wine distributor (less than 15 of us) where we sell wine to restaurants, bars, grocery stores and country clubs throughout the state. Incredibly fun job so far and it gives me the opportunity for free travel and possibly to pursue some wine industry certifications.
