an apartment burned down in Xinjiang but the fire department didn't act on it because of covid restrictions. 10 people died and many on critical condition.

It's also probably good to provide context in a topic like this.

Essentially a fire in Urumqi killed 10 people because they were locked inside their building and barricades setup didn't even allow the fire truck to get close enough to the building.

I doubt this will turn into much beyond localized protests but.... why is China being so strict on the zero covid stuff still? It feels very 2020 and its almost 2023...

Covid hasn't stopped in the rest of the world we just aren't tracing every single case anymore. This isn't the sort of pandemic that ends because its gone down to zero cases its endemic in most countries. Covid is terrible but its just there now and its not going anywhere.

likely, blame high population density aka overcrowding. Chinese people lack space and privacy in general, thus much higher chance to catch covid than westerners.

This is bullshit reasoning. Nearly everyone in the west and most of the world in general has accepted the fact that they will get covid or they have had covid. You vaccinate every few months with the best vaccine you can find. You pray to whatever god you believe in to help you get through it. You are getting it. You can't escape it.

then perhaps you are right that it is a psychological reason more than environmental.

they are afraid of dying and catching covid so much that they will ruin economy by enforcing curfews and lockdowns.

This seems like the first time since 1989 that people are openly calling out the CCP on a fairly big scale. (China has tons of protests, but they are almost always against the local government).

The CCP could probably stop these protests in the short term by ending their zero-covid policy. That said, the CCP would then show weakness that they "bowed down" to protesters.

Lots of boomers in this topic I've been seeing footage on TikTok and IG just pop off on my feed without me even searching for it.

I mean there's so many and they get forgotten so quickly how can I name just one? I've seen tweets and articles about China-wide covid protest, overthrowing Xi Jinping, Xinjiang revolt etc etc multiples times just this year and nothing ever comes of it.

The worst is when people just post tweets of single out of context photos of urban areas in China from twitter users that don't even seem to be from China themselves.

The thing is people eat up news that there's some rebellion in China/North Korea/etc because it feels like the good guys are winning I guess. But they never try at all to verify the details.
