lost my Pokmon yellow cartridge that had my first ever Pokmon team from childhood. Luckily I had the team saved on stadium.

accidentally overwritten my RE4 save file that had 30+ play throughs and every gun unlocked

let my little cousin borrow my N64 and games and he overwritten my 102% dk64 file.

my sister lost my super Mario 64 with 101% completion. Those platformer games are a pain in the ass to complete

500 hour file on pokemon diamond gone forever.

My friend and I played like 10 hours together and the memory card was full when we actually tried saving. We walked to my other friends house like a mile away to get his memory card and there was a save error. We lost the progress

I remember one of my ps1 or ps2 memory cards got completely wiped. That was pretty painful, though I can't really remember what was lost.

More recently, I lost my Out of the Park Baseball baseball save that I've been playing for 5 IRL years, 12 in-game years. I do have a backup, but it's like five months old. It's really taken the wind out of my sails.

Fable on Xbox due to the damn save bug that wiped your saves via "corruption" when you saved "too much", the bullshit was given the axe in TLC edition and the anniversary edition though.

lost my PS2 memory card, which was mostly filled by JRPG file saves including FFX with Ultimate weapons unlocked (fuck the lightning dodging), Wild Arms 3 with Ragu-o-Ragula beaten, Digital Devil Saga with immune to everything, SRW Alpha 3rd 10th playthrough (enough credits and PP to max everything), etc.

I had a Sega Saturn as a kid and it had internal storage for saves. Except that kid me had no idea that a watch battery in the back of the unit kept that storage space going, so one random day I unplugged the console without realizing the battery had died and lost ALL my saves across all my games.

My PS3 died this year, and among other saves I lost my MGS2 save file while I was trying to go through all the VR missions. It wasn't copy protected like the other saves, but I hadn't backed it up in a while. I had over 100 of the missions done at that point, mostly Raiden's. They were easy and boring the first time around, and they weren't any better the second time.

Pokmon Yellow. I had every Pokmon except the version exclusive ones that were missing, Alakazam, Gengar, Flareon and Jolteon but my cousin started playing it and she saved over my file.

Skyrim - over 100hrs in.
FF7 - Disc two
Dying Light 2 - Stuck in final boss fight.

Shenmue 2 file on Xbox got corrupted somehow and I was like 75% done.

Also Mad Catz Gamecube memory card wiped itself at least twice. Lot of stuff on that.

When i first got FF7 on PS1, I made it to the final disc twice with my memory card deleting both times somehow. Had to play it 3 times to beat it.

Someone in hs stole my ds with my diamond and emerald in it and i lost EVERYTHING from 3rd and 4th gen, including all the pokemon transferred from colosseum and gale of darkness

When I realized the battery in my Pokemon Gold cartridge stopped working. I was so young that I didn't know what was wrong but every time I loaded it up I had to start a new game.

My entire hand held collection from GB to 3DS, ranging from games and limited edition consoles, was stolen by a friend. That hurt.

My brother deleted my Sonic Adventure 2 save file with 120 emblems

Lost every save on my og xbox when the disc drive died. (It had a phantasy star online ep 1 and 2 save with like 900 hours on it. It wasn't as much as my gamecube version save but it still hurt).

My second og xbox got shorted out by a lightning strike. Never bothered getting a 3rd 1.

I had a perfect file with all the most difficult time trials completed for Crash Bandicoot 3 when I was a teenager, which ended up getting corrupted. So I lost everything. And I learned from that experience that it didn't matter at all. Now I don't stress about trying to get perfect scores in games, just to save them on some irrelevant file that nobody cares about. It was pretty liberating honestly.

SA2B. Had just finally gotten a Chaos Chao (devil) for the first time. Got super excited and saved the game. Ran to my cousins place, plug in the memory card and start to boot it up.

File Corrupted. Didnt even get to enter him into a race or karate or anything. Just.. gone.

150 hour save in Skyrim got corrupted. That one really hurt >_>

When I was little, my youngest sister opened the PS2 disc tray while my Cars game was saving and it got corrupted.

I also had a couple of close calls:

1. When I migrated to a new laptop I assumed Starbound had cloud saves when it didn't, and at the time I didn't know AppData was a thing so I thought that 100+ HR save was gone. Months later I was able to find and restore it from a backup containing AppData, however.

2. There was some weird glitch with SAO Fatal Bullet where Steam cloud saves would sync an older save of the game so it didn't save the hours of grinding I was doing. I had to manually copy the alternate save from my PC into the cloud sync folder before I started the game every time to fix it.

I had a 360 get the RRoD right as I beat NGII on Master Ninja mode. When I slapped the hard drive on a new 360 it was wiped clean. NGII wasn't the only thing I lost, but it's the only save I still remember and get annoyed about.

100% Vice City file got corrupted (and no, I never saved at the ice cream factory, probably just too many cheats)

Pokemon Gold cart that had shiny Rattata and shiny Ampharos on it died a couple years back

I straight up lost a PS1 memory card from when I was a kid, dont remember what was even on it at this point though. Probably Crash, Resident Evil and Gran Turismo.

Fully maxed lv 9999 save for the original Disgaea PS2. Memory card got lost.

20 hours on Twilight Princess HD

A similar amount of time on FF X HD

Back in the 90s my little sister wiped my Pokemon Blue save. I only beat like 3 or 4 gym leaders by the time she accidentally wiped it which I guess is kinda major for a ~10 year old, but I used that single incident to prevent her from playing any of my single player games ever since then >:D

Lost an entire 3DS and its SD card with hundreds of hours in Pokemon XY where I had helped clone a bunch of Pokemon at launch when Pokemon Bank had that infamous delay and Resident Evil Revelation online legendary rifles as well as DLC of other games in around 2017.

This event is what fully got me into save editing and homebrew.

my ps4 took a shit when i was in the penultimate dungeon of persona 5

Not really a save file but sorta. This Female Orc I made in Skyrim, the most perfect character I ever crafted and I lost the preset data and have never been able tor replicate her look.

i got back ups of back ups of back ups of my racemenu presets bc im afraid to lose them again lol

I popped in NBA 2K11 almost a month ago and saw my data has been corrupted. I didn't feel like playing 2K23 and wanted to play in an era where Kobe was king and Monte Ellis was a menace.

I had a good 200+ hours into New Vegas when I exited a vault and some NCR ranger came running up to me and shooting me. I killed him but he respawned, like being teleported from the sky down type respawn. Everytime I killed him, he'd come back and essentially killed me.

I reloaded all the way back through ny previous saves (I had a good 50 or so), and no matter I did, even if I stayed friends with the NCR, the dude would Michael Myers his way back and kill me. Like, I'd be up in the mountains, use my sniper rifle, and see him running across the desert to come fuck my shit up. THROUGH EVERY SAVE!!!!

While I was pissed, it was pretty fucking funny.

During my first play through of KoTOR 1 I was somehow able to get through the door leading to the summit of the temple where you confront bastila to make your light or darkside choice without doing the puzzle in the basement first to unlock it.

Again, my first playthrough so had no idea i sequence broke the game, but after i was supposed to go back through the door (After choosing darkside, so extremely important moment in the story) it would not open, and i didn't know wtf was going on! I was walking back and forth swinging my lightsaber like a moron for hours (wasn't using internet guides then. Knew enough about games though to know a glitch had to have happened somewhere, so i had no choice but to start the game over again.

Worst. Bug. Ever.

What you're describing sounds like the kind of thing developers put into a game as an anti-piracy measure, but for what it's worth in googling to see if that was the case I stumbled upon an old Reddit thread. Apparently what you're experiencing is a bug where you start a quest line but then go hostile with that faction. The guy who keeps chasing you is supposed to run up to you and give you a radio, but since you've gone hostile he attacks you instead. The reason he relentlessly chases you is because the NPC quest part of his behavior requires him to run all the way up to you no matter where you are, and the reason he keeps responding is because it's necessary for you to get the item for that quest.

Yeah losing a PS2 memory card with 100% GTA: SA along with who knows how many other games will take the cake for me. Oh I also had a FF XII save with 3 Zodiac Spears. That hurt.

That time my DS was stolen with the copy of dragon quest monsters in it. The silver lining is I went out and got the gold legend of zelda DS as a replacement. Still have it and I'm using it to do a challenge run of FF5.

F-Zero GX with everything unlocked (including the character videos), I would've backed it up too if Nintendon't didn't copy protect the saves... for no reason.

My Pokemon Silver died eventually.
It was this slow and uncomfortable realisation that there was no longer any proof of what I'd sunk all that time into, that my Pokemon and my adventure had all collectively died like a pet. I had all three starters lv100, all legendaries, Pokemon friends had traded to me that I'd kept on my team, lots of time spent testing playground rumors, a shiny Tyrogue, a Pokedex inching toward the prestigious Fuck it, Celebi's impossible state and every NPC trainer pummelled into the ground with only E4, Red and the rival still coming back for more.

It wasn't a game I was actively playing anymore so it wasn't like it was suddenly snatched off of me, every now and then I liked to turn it on, go look round and see if I could do anything with whatever I'd learned while playing Gen 3/4. For a while it made me really paranoid that it'd happen again out of nowhere and that I needed to save all my Pokemon. I had an XD save crammed full of Gen 3 Pokemon and another save for Gen 4.

It was kind of like when I first beat Lance and thought all the fun had abruptly ended. Except this is the game that makes the best effort to actually answer your pleas of I wish there was more after rolling the credits. I wish games were like that now.

Lost a Chrono Trigger save years ago, was a good ways in too. I might start again since it's been a while and I always wanted to finish it.
