Yea, I just don't think the infrastructure is there for cloud gaming. America's internet is definitely too shitty. Too many ISPs still enforcing data caps. Fiber isn't widespread enough either.

Fun fact it was the Bethesda purchase Microsoft did that ultimately scared Google away the most. They saw the kind of money Microsoft was spending and Google thought "Oh man what the fuck are we doing here?" so ultimately that purchase has already paid for itself. Microsoft is fine having Sony and Nintendo being their competition in the console gaming space. They want to be the big tech conglomerate that has the space mostly to itself.

Imagine being a massive company that specializes in data collection, sorting, and processing...having access to literally billions of searches and usage patterns for the entire world.

And they still didn't know this shit was a bad idea. People said it was dead on arrival from the day it was announced and somehow this big multi-billion dollar, multi-national company couldn't assess that for themselves. lmao it's just so tragic.

I feel terrible for the people who spent the last X-number of months/years developing games for the platform because all that effort went up in smoke.

Closest we will get in the foreseeable future is with Starlink laser link or whatever the fuck which should decrease latency somewhat for people further away from datacenters. But it wont ever reduce it enough to be viable. Its still shit for people living in cities even. You want fibre internet and to be extremely close to the datacenters for it to be somewhat viable in some cases but thats never going to be true for 99.9999% of people.

Google has been shooting itself in the foot with all their services they've been killing off. When Stadia was first announced many tech news articles already expressed doubts about the longevity of this project. Which probably led to fewer users actually buying it ...which led to it actually being cancelled.

If Google ever wants to have another go at the gaming market in the future, this will hurt their chances a lot.

Unlike many others, I've actually tried the service and it works amazingly well. The issue, and the ultimate reason for its downfall, is the model. When people think of streaming, they think of Netflix. Stadia should've been the netflix for streaming games, but instead decided to go more the PS+ route where you claim few games every month and keep them as long as you pay the subscription fee. You can also buy them, but you're basically paying full price for the game.

Oh yeah and the latency is noticeable as well. I think that's the biggest reason streaming on games just won't work because no matter what you do there will always be some latency issues regarding it. It's a nice feature to have on an existing service, but it should never be the main selling point of it.

Google mentioned vaguely somewhere that they will be making the platform available to other providers. Probably a service you can buy as a developer to stream a cloud version of your game but you'll be responsible for everything and Google will just rent you the hardware.

They did. There's two kinds of streaming actually.

1. Stream games from your own Xbox "GameStream" functionality equivalent to PlayStation remote play.

2. xCloud which doesn't support literally every game on game pass but it doesn't require you to own the game or Xbox.
