I think a competent law enforcement is essential to society. However if courts and police unions continue to protect unlawful acts and irresponsible behavior of unfit officers, then I have no desire to support the pigs. It's a shame we don't have any. A cop that does things like the one in OP's article is a bad cop. A cop who covers for another cop who does those things is a bad cop. A cop that knows these things happen and does nothing to stop them or change the situation is a bad cop. A cop that actually speaks out about those things and tries to stop them is no longer a cop anymore because they get fired for going against the system.

Find me a cop who actually spoke out about police brutality and accountability, got to keep their job, and actually brought about meaningful change in their department. Then and only then I'll call them a good cop.

I'm not handling any posts in this topic, but I will issue a clear warning that equating the police to persecuted peoples like Muslims and BIPOC isn't going to fly favourably for those users.

At what point did she leave the vehicle? Before or after her father was killed?

The flaw in your argument though. If its true that speaking out will get you fired, and acknowledging that a society where only bad and murderous cops remain is absolutely HORRIBLE for the people, is not the best choice to just try to do what good you can day by day, help people, provide positive and helpful interactions with people so they don't meet a bad and murderous cop? Don't we need those people? If you acknowledge a good cop can't change things without getting fired, would we not be better off if more good people became cops and tried to do good to offset the bad?

Obesity is also not always under control. A lot of people actually do have a medical condition that "makes them fat" it's just that the medical condition is probably depression and people don't like talking about it or admitting that their mental issues are making them have unhealthy habits.

We're all people. If you strongly believe against stereotypes and of judging groups as a whole, it seems like that should extend to everybody, not just societally persecuted groups. It's those types of attitudes that leads to persecution in the first place, so how is it not hypocritical to aim it at others even if those groups are not persecuted ones?

How does a group define itself? We have some groups that are defined by the circumstances of their birth, skin color, etc. But also there are groups defined by their members making choices to hold noxious views, or take take harmful positions in society. There are things that are perfectly fair to say about the latter set of groups that cannot be said for the former. "Republicans are anti-abortion" is a stereotype, but it is also true, for all intents and purposes.

Trying to take a nuanced view and thinking of imaginary good people in a group set on causing harm is missing the forest for the trees.

Because there is a legal and systemic framework that endorses and supports cops who engage in this shitty behavior and punishes and rejects cops who don't.

Everyone joins the force as a good cop. Then 1 of three things happens.

1. They become disillusioned with the behavior and expectations of the police and quit
2. They are dismissed for trying to actually make authority abusers suffer any kind of consequences
3. They become bad cops because if you can't beat em, join em.

That's the difference.

There's more to this story that's not in the article.

The area he lives in has no tax budget for the fire department. They rely on community funding for it to pay for everything. This guy thought he was going to be smart and just not pay. His house caught fire and they came and said you haven't paid but if you pay now we'll help so he did. Then he stopped paying and it happened again and he was warned that this wasn't an optional fee. Then when it happened a third time they just let it burn.

By letting him continue to get away with it they set the precedent that nobody ever needs to pay it until something catches fire, then the fire department literally can't exist because it has no money.

The rule is meaningless if it isn't enforced.

No, it's not. You can't call demeaning names to a whole group because of the bad actions of some within it. That's called a slur. Just because THESE cops did awful things doesn't mean that gives you free reign to demean and insult all cops.

If you feel justified pointing to these cops and using it as an excuse to use slurs, maybe think about how you'd feel if people used this as an excuse with racism. It's not cool and shouldn't be allowed or welcomed.

These cops suck but it's uncomfortable seeing this used as an excuse to go at all cops, just like it'd be the same if people posted videos of other races committing crime and used it as an excuse to get angry at the entire race

Stop comparing professions to race or any other immutable characteristic. A few bad apples can spoil a police department. A few bad apples don't spoil a race.

Coming into a topic about the killing of a child and responding with "ackshually not all cops are pigs and you shouldn't say that" isn't necessarily wrong, but completely the wrong take.

I actually disagree with HHH on his stance that it's similar to a racial slur.

But I agree with his stance that it is still a slur.

Either way, it has nothing to do with the point of my post; logical or not, he came in looking for a genuine conversation on a serious subject. Dozens of users are quite literally "provoking him to react negatively." You know it, I know it, the users posting it know it. And they know they won't get modded because it's a favorable attitude held by the majority on the board, including the mod staff.

Truth is, not modding posts that are blatantly "provoking other users to react negatively" because they're provoking someone you also don't like is the exact reason US society/politics is crumbling. "I refuse to listen to you and engage in a mutually positive discussion over our differences" is the very reason we'll never break free from this cancerous two-party system.
