Wasn't this pretty obvious... since... ya know.... B12, and humans inability to make it, is pretty well known, only reliable way for vegans to get B12 is fortified foods or supplements.

Here are some of the Symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency
If you have anaemia caused by a vitamin B12 deficiency, you may have other symptoms, such as:
  • a pale yellow tinge to your skin
  • a sore and red tongue (glossitis)
  • mouth ulcers
  • pins and needles (paraesthesia)
  • changes in the way that you walk and move around
  • disturbed vision
  • irritability
  • depression
  • changes in the way you think, feel and behave
  • a decline in your mental abilities, such as memory, understanding and judgement (dementia)

incidentally, a regimen of methylcobalamin and magnesium malate cured me of fibromyalgia.

The usual cyanocobalamin is garbage. It's B12, but it's stuck to cyanide that you have to be rid of.
methylcobalamin is the actual B12 you actually need.

B12 is ludicrously easy to supplement, if you eat a meatless diet and you don't do this that is not a function of vegetarianism being wrong, it is that you did it wrong.

While I agree, I think the general populations ability to monitor their nutrition is pretty poor.

Which has nothing to do with being a vegan, but I'd wager a large portion of vegans don't consistently take B12 supplements.

I'm no vegan but I'll agree we probably eat too much meat. I feel it was only meant as a small part of our diet. We got the teeth of a omnivore.

Humans are just a weird animal all around. Based on what we got physically we shouldn't be top of the food chain. Our intelligence is the only thing that allows that.

Any diet that doesn't provide the necessary nutrients to live a healthy life and doesn't provide any in excess to the point where it would be a detriment (to rephrase my awkward wording; not too little and not too much) says to me that the diet is inherently broken. You shouldn't need supplements to ensure your body meets the healthy living criteria if you're eating right. Not ragging on vegetarianism since coolguyjimmy brought up fortified food being among vegetarianism's only options. Just ragging on that logic of dismissing the issue with supplements.

I'll also make the distinction that this is different from something like trying to live a body builder lifestyle where you're putting on more muscle than needed for everyday life and so you'd be on a high protein diet which would require supplements to reach certain muscle mass goals.

Thr actual nutritional requirement of b12 and basically every other nutrient is so low that most people get their needs met within the first 10% of their calories.

B12 deficiencies happen in people who are either suffering from famine or who have extreme diets. Regular vegetarians don't have this problem, and few vegans do either.

Lots of people go vegan for different reasons. Some do ot for the animal cruelty and others for health reasons.

Any vegan that knows what theyre doing knows they have to get B12 from somewhere. I eat mostly plant based with animal protein every now and then. I still use nutritional yeast with is full of B12 when eating tofu and salads.

I would argue some meatless ppl are depressed due to an overwhelming awareness of their surroundings and being too empathetic.

Everyone's diet relies on supplementation nowadays. Vitamin D in milk, iodine in salt, folic acid in flour. Even the B12 from the meat you eat was likely fortified in the animal's feed.

I find this dubious, despite the fact that I don't care for vegans. If there is any pattern at all, I'd bet it's more due to behavior or lifestyle that's not seen as accepted or normal causing thee depression.
