I left once it was no longer used by college aged people. Like 13 years ago.

There was that intial trend of everyone posting college related things, then engagements, then marriage, then oh hey look at our nice house, and then omg its a Boy/Girl surprise reveals etc im like alright im out.

The endless scrolling killed it for me. Part of the reason I dont use much social media.

You can't just ban Facebook that's an infringement on free speech

Yeah I'm trying to disconnect from random social media more. In January when my boyfriend moves in I really want to be more mentally present living my actual life and not being online. I don't really need escapism anymore.

I can't, I have family and friends that would be unreachable any other way.

I deleted mine years ago. I kinda miss some aspects of it because I find it very difficult to reach out to people out of the blue and it would probably make that easier, but it just got way too awful like everything once they started figuring out how to maximize revenue.

I kinda wish there was a social media site that was a paid subscription or something so they didn't just sell your data but the public would never go for that

Maybe this is extreme but it seems its just a way for the old people to congregate and share veiws that have no basis in reality. Like they can't say what they want at dinner with the family so they share bigoted veiws on Facebook because it was all the rage a decade ago.

I'm really glad I've always put off social media for the most part.

No, Facebook is overrun with open racists because they aren't ashamed anymore. All I did every time I logged in was insult and fight with racists.

Facebook is blocked on my devices but I still use messenger. Basically the only part of facebook still worth using.

I use it mainly for funny pictures, or keeping up with family that I cant talk to everyday. As for what I see, I think it depends on whos my friend. I mainly see their posts. Since Im usually not friends with racist, I dont see many racist posts

We stopped using ours because all it did was cause fights. One or two family members is always being a fucking stalker and commenting cringe shit friends on extended family's personal pics and starting arguments then expecting one of us to mediate. Nope, not fucking having it.

Tonight, a Saturday would've been prime drama too. Everyone out drinking and checking Facebook and running their mouth about everyone's shared dinners or choices if entertainment.

I did find a Fairy Fountain from Zelda though. I had nothing to throw in cept my phone.

I know that you can easily find racists and bigots on FB, but Ive actively unfollowed all the streams where I was seeing them, so I rarely ever see that shit on my FB now. My feed is mostly stuff I enjoy seeing thankfully.

Yeah some of my family is mad racist and I'm in tons of groups that just show racist content posted. I'm always arguing on public pages with racists. You don't have to be friends with them to see their content.

Oh. The public pages. The ones I have are usually games related. So, I see mostly those And Nintendo things. Like a lot fan art and stuff It makes sense that if people are posting racist stuff on those, youd see it. Or your family, like you said

the most annoying thing is when you realize you logged in with facebook in certain things (like bumble -- that or phone number which doesn't support number changes, or apple ID but that isn't allowed on an android phone /minirant) and have to reactivate for two minutes

Yes. You have to seek it out in order to see it in the first place. It isn't just there. You have to be subscribed to whatever groups those people are in.

This is true. Since no one in my family is racist (who use Facebook, at least), and the pages I subscribe to are mostly normal people on gaming pages, I dont see anything racist

but I do agree that Facebooks algorithm and feed are pretty easily manipulated to curate what you actually want to see and avoid what you dont

I see it all the time in comments of sponsored public ads. I don't have to seek out anything lol

And also if it's algorithm based it makes sense I'd see more BS since I engaged with the comments to argue. That's the whole reason I deactivated because that's all I was using it for at this point.

Mostly Nintendo pages. And Splatoon. Im rarely on, but I also do go through the comments. I mostly see fan art, or people asking questions about stuff Maybe I found the good game pages

yeah, its algorithm based, so the more you engage with those people, the more youll see them. I used to try engaging with them a lot too. I tried to do my best to be articulate and kind and actually get them to understand why what theyre doing and saying is wrong, but there came a point where it was clear most of them already knew what they were doing was shitty, they just reveled in it. And arguing and playing on their level never accomplished anything, so for my own peace of mind I had to just deconnect from all that. Its also why I rarely seriously engage the racists/sexists/homophobic/transphobic/ableist and otherwise bigoted people on this board. I still find value in some of FBs other features though, so I didnt want to deactivate it, but deactivating it is definitely a good choice if youre not finding any value in it. Plus, only old people use Facebook now. All the Gen Z kids use Instagram and Snapchatz and TokTik.

Now my whole feed is just some lesbian pothead going off on insane conspiracy theories. I wouldn't put it past her to get angry about me supporting gay marriage. Idk if people were always this stupid, all the smart people left, or facebook made them stupid. Some guy said that masks don't work because covid can fit through skin pores.

other than a couple gaming and random groups i've just been following artists and art groups. that community seems mostly chill.

though i'm pretty sure at least half of my dad's side of the family isn't a fan of me at this point.

I have a fake fb account i only use to follow restaurants and stores to know about deals and promotions.. I can't find any use for it other than that.

Eh as I understand masks only minimally help you not catch it. It was more to prevent you from spreading it if you have it.

Skin pore thing though sounds silly. But I kept hearing you could get if your eyes came in contact with it. Like touch a infected surface then rub your eyes. Which honestly was the hardest thing not to do lol. Wearing a mask was 100 times easier
